Kyoto Horse Racing Canceled Due To Snow

The JRA suspends February 8 racing as snowfall creates unsafe conditions, rescheduled for February 10.

The Japan Racing Association (JRA) announced the cancellation of the scheduled horse racing event at Kyoto due to significant snowfall on February 8, 2025. The decision was made after determining it was unsafe to conduct the races, following substantial snow accumulation on the racing course.

Snowfall began prior to the event, leaving about 7 centimeters of snow on the turf course and 3 centimeters on the dirt track by 5 AM on the day of the race. Although the weather cleared later with some sunshine and occasional flurries, the snow removal crews worked diligently to prepare the tracks throughout the morning. By early afternoon, the track staff had successfully cleared the snow, allowing visibility of the turf and dirt surfaces again.

Despite the cancellation of the races at Kyoto, events at the Tokyo and Kokura tracks continued as planned on the same day. The JRA also decided to cancel the preliminary sales for the Kisaragi Prize (G3) scheduled for February 9, indicating the extent to which the weather disruptions affected the racing calendar.

This cancellation marked the first total halt of all 12 scheduled races since October 13, 2019, when events were similarly canceled due to Typhoon conditions. The previous occurrence of snow-related racing cancellations was noted on February 9, 2019, and this snowfall-related event was the first snow cancellation specific to the Kyoto track since January 15, 2017.

The response to the weather conditions not only affects the immediate racing calendar but prompts the association to monitor situation and accessibility surrounding horse transport for upcoming events. Officials stated they would assess the local transport networks and make judgements about future races based on these logistics as well.

The official record of cancellation coupled with rescheduling since 2012 indicates fluctuations influenced by both wild weather and seasons. For example: the September 30, 2012, races at Hanshin were postponed due to Typhoon conditions, whereas the January 14, 2013 event at Nakayama was rescheduled owing to snow.

Historically, the JRA’s weather-related cancellations due to snowfall have ranged from late winter events to early spring, reflective of how significantly variables like temperature and snowfall can impact operations. The insights gathered through these recurring patterns form the basis of operational planning and risk management.

The emphasis on ensuring safety within racing events remains at the forefront as teams manage snow removal and track conditions, readying for the rescheduled races. Unsurprisingly, horse racing events are highly weather-dependent, necessitating continuous assessment and adaptation to environmental changes. February 10 has been slated as the date for the rescheduled races of the Kyoto event without revisions to the horse entries, retaining participants' original race numbers.

Looking at the broader picture of horse racing, the weather continues to be one of the primary influences dictifying whether events can proceed as planned. Racing fans and betters are advised to stay updated with future announcements through JRA channels, especially with changing conditions potentially influencing upcoming races across Japan.

While the snow interrupted racing for now, the adaptability and resilience of the JRA crews showcase their commitment to maintaining the integrity of horse racing through trying weather conditions. Observers and participants alike remain hopeful for stable conditions as the winter continues to progress.
