A tragic residential fire broke out early on February 28, 2025, at city-run apartments located on Higashitake no Sato-cho, Nishikyo-ku, Kyoto City. The devastating fire lasted approximately seven hours, leading to two fatalities and several injuries among residents.

According to reports from Kyodo News, the incident began around 12:25 AM, shaking the peaceful neighborhood as flames erupted fiercely from the building. The fire quickly engulfed about 112 square meters of residential space across two floors, with the first and second floors suffering extensive damage.

Residents of the five-story building were caught off guard. A male resident, aged in his 70s, recounted the terrifying moments leading up to the evacuation. "When I tried to go to sleep, fire was shooting out of the building with great force, and I evacuated immediately. People were carried away on stretchers, it was terrifying," he shared.

Emergency services arrived swiftly at the scene, battling the flames to prevent them from spreading to adjacent structures. Despite their efforts, the blaze proved exceptionally challenging to contain, causing panic and chaos among the residents, many of whom were awakened by the intense heat and smoke.

Five individuals, all aged between 50 and 80, required hospitalization due to the incident. Tragically, two males succumbed to their injuries, and another two are currently unconscious. A female resident sustained minor injuries to her leg. The local fire department, alongside the Kyoto Prefectural Police, are currently investigating the cause of the fire, which remains unclear at this time.

The local community has been left shaken by the incident. One resident noted, “It felt like the flames were everywhere. I could hardly breathe.” This sense of fear and paranoia reflects the sentiment of those who experienced the terrifying night first-hand.

Investigations will include assessing fire safety standards adhered to by the city-run apartments, as they seek to determine whether there were any lapses or fire code violations.
Local officials have expressed their condolences for the victims and their families, emphasizing the importance of emergency preparedness and fire safety measures to prevent future tragedies.

Local schools and community centers have started discussions on enhancing safety protocols, ensuring residents are aware of evacuation plans and fire safety measures.
