KwaZulu-Natal Faces Dire Flooding As Heavy Rains Strike

High alerts issued as communities urged to seek shelter and avoid travel amid severe weather warnings

KwaZulu-Natal is grappling with severe flooding as heavy rains pound the province, prompting urgent disaster response measures. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 5 weather warning for impactful thunderstorms and potential hazards across the region. Thulasizwe Buthelezi, the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, has taken decisive action by mobilizing disaster management teams across the province.

The severe weather warning, which was rolled out on March 2, 2025, predicts extensive rainfall, particularly affecting municipalities like uMdoni, eThekwini, uMkhambathini, Ray Nkonyeni, and uMzumbe. Initial reports indicate severe impact on local infrastructure, especially within the eThekwini metro, where flooding of various roads has already begun.

"Initial reports indicate road infrastructure, in and around eThekwini Metro, is already experiencing flooding, particularly along the M4 South, and other areas leading onto the N3," Buthelezi stated, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

Local reports highlight several key thoroughfares overwhelmed by water, rendering them impassable. Sections of major roads like Tara Road, Edwin Swales Drive, and various parts of the M4 have reported substantial flooding, causing significant disruptions to traffic and transportation. The municipality has called on residents to heed safety recommendations seriously.

"We are deeply concerned about the potential impact of these severe thunderstorms and the associated flooding. The province has already experienced tragic losses of life due to recent inclement weather conditions," Buthelezi emphasized as he repeated safety instructions for residents.

Residents living near riverbanks and within low-lying areas are urged to evacuate immediately to seek shelter on higher ground. Transport disruptions and infrastructure damage are expected to escalate as heavy rain continues throughout the day.

With safety measures at the forefront of authorities' agendas, Buthelezi urged residents, "We implore all residents to heed this warning and take necessary precautions to safeguard themselves and their families." The MEC suggested minimizing non-essential travel and remaining indoors where feasible, especially during the peak hours of the storm.

Emergency response teams are mobilized and ready to assist anyone affected by the flooding. The Cogta department encourages the public to report emergencies and stay updated on weather advisories. "Stay informed about the latest weather updates from reputable sources," Buthelezi advised.

The situation bears echoes of the recent deadly floods where six individuals lost their lives due to similar circumstances. The eThekwini Municipality and related emergency services have been stressed by the urgency of response required during such climatic events.

Current reports reflect not just isolated incidents, as flooding has rendered numerous structures compromised, restricting access and posing threats to community safety. Emergency services are inundated with calls from residents seeking assistance.

Residents are also encouraged to partake responsibly and cooperate with authorities during this crisis. According to local media outlets, various relief organizations, including Gift of the Givers and the Red Cross, are mobilizing resources to support displaced families.

"We recognize the needs of families who require assistance, including help to bury their lost loved ones," Buthelezi commented, addressing the human impact of the disaster.

Looking forward, Buthelezi confirmed continued monitoring of the situation with expectations of additional rainfall. "The safety of our communities is our utmost priority. We implore all residents to heed this warning and take necessary precautions to safeguard themselves and their families," he reiterated.

To report any emergencies, residents within eThekwini can contact local authorities by calling 031 361 0000. It is imperative to remain vigilant as more rain is anticipated, compounding existing challenges and immediate dangers posed by the severe conditions. Prompt, coordinated efforts are taking precedence as the community rallies to provide aid and seek preventive measures to protect lives and property.
