Kuwait Launches First Al-Kiram Tournament To Celebrate Heritage

The inaugural event attracted 64 teams during Ramadan, promoting traditional games among youth and community bonding.

The National Humanitarian Message Association, in collaboration with the Qatar Charity Foundation, recently launched the inaugural Al-Kiram tournament, aimed at preserving national heritage and reviving folk games for future generations. The event saw enthusiastic participation across all age groups, reinforcing the cultural significance of traditional games.

During the opening of this first-of-its-kind tournament, Amad Boukhamsin, the head of the National Humanitarian Message Association, expressed his delight at the success of the event, underlining the association's commitment to continue organizing the tournament annually with significant prizes for the winners. "This tournament will continue for years and will provide valuable prizes for the winners," Boukhamsin stated, adding, "We are devoted to preserving and introducing popular heritage to our younger generations, fostering communication and familiarity across various community groups."

The tournament, which attracted 64 teams, was described as the first experience for holding matches focused on the Al-Kiram game, with officials noting the importance of engaging youth through such activities. Muhammad Al-Qattan, the official representative for the tournament, remarked, "This tournament is the first experience for holding matches in the Al-Kiram game, with the participation of 64 teams. We have noticed increasing interest among young players in recent years." This high level of involvement from the youth was echoed by the excitement surrounding registration, which filled the tournament's spots within hours.

Al-Qattan emphasized the significance of increasing the number of tournaments and matches dedicated to this traditional game, highlighting how much enthusiasm young competitors exhibited during the series of events. “Holding this tournament is considered a lovely opportunity for the youth, targeting those who want to make good use of their free time,” he noted.

During discussions about the ways to promote the Al-Kiram game, Al-Qattan emphasized the need for unity among the rules governing the game across social gatherings, such as diwaniyas, and hinted at plans for establishing Kuwait’s first dedicated club for Al-Kiram, which would contribute to fostering traditional folk games.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Al-Qalaf, the secretary of the National Humanitarian Message Association, articulated the value of this initiative, saying, "The collaboration with the Qatar Foundation to organize the first Al-Kiram tournament holds tremendous significance. The event has garnered considerable interest from diwaniya enthusiasts who have been playing this game for many years." Al-Qalaf reiterated their commitment to continue hosting such activities, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

Hamad Bouhamad, the deputy chairman of the National Humanitarian Message Association, supported this sentiment and emphasized the importance of community engagement through events like the Al-Kiram tournament, which brings together participants from all walks of life. "There were numerous competitors eager to take part, showcasing all segments of the Kuwaiti community," Bouhamad said.

An emotional note came from Abdul Amir Al-Qattan, who expressed the immense value of organizing this tournament alongside the Humanitarian Message Association, viewing it as part of the foundation for exciting future competitions across various domains.

The Al-Kiram game itself reflects Kuwait's rich cultural history, typically played in cafes and councils. It involves players using their fingers to aim at small holes on a square board, reminiscent of billiards but played with distinct local flair. Al-Kiram has long been appreciated as part of Kuwait's diverse heritage, and this tournament aims to strengthen its presence among younger audiences.

Participants and viewers alike extended their gratitude to the National Humanitarian Message Association and the Qatar Foundation for their exceptional organization and management of the tournament. Spectators praised the competition's intensity and the professionalism of refereeing, ensuring fairness throughout matches.

Winners and participants expressed their appreciation for the event. Ayoub Mohsen and Ahmed Al-Failakawi, champions of the inaugural tournament, stated, "We extend our gratitude to all organizers for providing the platform for this tournament and acknowledge our coach's significant role in teaching us the game." Second-place laureates Hussein Al-Shatti and Mahmoud Abdel Aziz echoed similar praises noting, "The organization and execution of this tournament were outstanding, with all logistical needs carefully handled to create a memorable experience for participants."

Likewise, Abdul Rahman Al-Madhkour, who secured third place alongside Ali Al-Kandari, articulated, "We thank all sponsors for their continuous efforts—everything ran smoothly on every front of the competition."

The prizes awarded at this year's tournament reflect the competitive spirit and recognize talent: 1000 dinars for first place, 500 for second, 300 for third, and 150 dinars for fourth. These awards were well-received, with the winners expressing hopes for future tournaments to follow the same enthusiastic lines.

With the successful execution of the first Al-Kiram tournament, attendees left yearning for more, expressing hopes of seeing the event return next Ramadan. The blend of sporting and social interaction represented the perfect setting for fostering connections among participants and audiences alike. The future sure looks bright for Al-Kiram and its place within Kuwait's stunning cultural heritage.
