Kuwait and Ujjain Host Major Chess Tournaments
Two exciting chess tournaments have recently made headlines, showcasing international participation and bringing together top talent from the chess community. The first, the Kuwait International Chess Festival, kicked off on January 6, 2025, featuring over 250 players from 25 countries competing across five tournaments.
According to Adel Al-Amiri, Vice President of the Kuwait Mind Games Club, the festival is not just about the competition; it's also focused on promoting chess among youth and juniors. The event will feature tournaments for masters, challengers, and women, as well as rapid chess tournaments for adults and children. The festival is slated to run until January 13, with multiple rounds taking place daily.
"Today marks the beginning of our festival, and we are excited to see participation from some of the best males and females chess players around the world," Al-Amiri stated. He emphasized the Kuwait Mind Games Club’s integral role and expressed optimism about the event's success, which he believes will contribute significantly to the game's popularity within the region.
Meanwhile, the 1st Mahakal Rapid Rating Open 2024 took place on December 21-22, 2024, drawing attention for its competitive atmosphere. FM Ram Prakash emerged as the champion, scoring 8.5 out of 9, finishing half a point clear of his closest rivals, GM Himanshu Sharma, IM Himal Gusain, and Mraduhas Tripathi, who all scored 8 points.
During the tournament held at Standford International School, Ujjain, the stakes were high, with ₹125,000 total prize money on the line. The top prizes were ₹20,000 for the winner, along with trophies for the top three players. The tournament attracted 338 participants, including titled players, denoting the significant grassroots interest and competitive spirit around chess.
Ram Prakash’s performance was particularly noteworthy, as he became the champion after drawing with Himanshu Sharma, the only Grandmaster participating. His victory is being hailed as his first rating tournament win of 2024, marking him out as one of the rising stars of Indian chess.
Other notable attendees at the Mahakal Rapid Rating Open included prominent figures like Dr. Katyayan G Mishra, Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, who supported the event, as well as officials from the chess community who contributed to organizing the event efficiently.
