KTVU Meteorologist Bill Martin Retires After 33 Years

A beloved Bay Area weatherman bids farewell as he transitions to new endeavors.

Bill Martin, KTVU's beloved chief meteorologist, waved goodbye to viewers on February 27, 2025, after 33 memorable years on the air. Martin's retirement marks the end of a significant era for the Bay Area's television news, as he hands over his duties to the next generation of meteorologists.

First joining KTVU as a weekend weatherman back in 1992, Martin has become synonymous with the station. Known for his laid-back, surfer style and extensive meteorological knowledge, he created a distinct persona—bridging the gap between casual viewer and expert. Many recall him sharing forecasts with his signature warmth and familiarity, which made them feel like part of the family.

Reflecting on his time, Martin said, "I’ve never been anywhere else. I started in the Bay Area market. But I think about Dennis (Richmond), I think about Elaine (Corral)... all the people we’ve known over the years who’ve come through this place." His thoughtful acknowledgment of his colleagues emphasizes the strong bonds formed over decades.

Martin's media career has deep roots, beginning at KFTY Channel 50 as he lived out of his van and landed his first job as weatherman. He quickly rose through the ranks, eventually taking on the major role at KTVU. His educational background includes degrees from UC Berkeley and San Francisco State University, with focused studies on physical geography and atmospheric science. Along with earlier work at KPIX, his wide-ranging experience reinforced his credentials, making him not only familiar with viewers but respected within the meteorological community.

Throughout his long tenure, Martin successfully navigated significant challenges, including the Oakland Hills firestorm, the San Bruno gas explosion, and the Oroville Dam evacuations. Most personally, during the tragic Camp Fire in Paradise, he faced the heartbreaking loss of his childhood home. His genuine compassion and expertise have made him more than just a weatherman—he's been a trusted voice during the Bay Area's upheavals.

Friends and family celebrated Martin’s kindness and work ethic. His wife, Pam, fondly remembered their early days, saying, "He was so nice. That is what I first thought. He was so friendly to everyone, complimented everyone." This innate kindness has been echoed by colleagues who have received mentorship from him. Fellow meteorologist Mark Tamayo and others acknowledge Martin’s encouragement and support. He often uplifted younger staff, proclaiming, "The people, especially the younger folks just starting out," highlighting his connection to newer talent.

Martin, acknowledging his imminent transition from television to new ventures, said he doesn’t plan on disappearing completely. He is launching Weather Applied Metrics (WAM), focusing on how weather conditions impact sporting events—a project set to work with teams across Major League Baseball and the NFL. He is also keeping his weather passion alive through a popular YouTube channel, @2Meteorologist where he continues to share forecasts and insights.

The days leading up to Martin's final broadcast presented uncharacteristically lovely weather, perhaps reflecting the sunny optimism with which he has approached his career. His children, Avery and Bill, expressed pride and admiration throughout his final weeks, reminding their dad of the values he instilled. Avery stated, "He definitely instilled in me a sense there is nothing I can’t do..." bill echoed his father’s ethos by sharing how he learned the importance of chasing dreams and authenticity.

Martin's departure is bittersweet for many viewers who have grown accustomed to his smooth delivery and trustworthy forecasts. KTVU has seen its fair share of losses recently, including the passing of longtime anchor Dennis Richmond only weeks before Martin’s farewell. Martin is the last remaining member of the legendary anchor crew known for defining local news for generations.

Looking forward, Bill Martin remains enthusiastic about the opportunities retirement offers. “I’m just getting started!” he stated, alluding to future adventures with his family and newfound freedom to explore without the constraints of daily broadcasting. His legacy has left an indelible mark on the hearts of those he’s touched throughout his decades on screen, proving his blend of expertise and personality made him not just the Bay Area’s weatherman, but its trusted friend.

With Martin's exit, KTVU embarks on the search for its next chief meteorologist, tasked with filling the shoes of someone who seamlessly blended professional competence with genuine charm. Those with fond memories of the surf-loving meteorologist will undoubtedly think of him as they experience each new weather forecast—knowing his spirit and knowledge will still resonate within the Bay Area community.
