Krewe Of Gemini Parade To Celebrate Community Spirit And Tradition

Shreveport's annual parade features safety measures and royal court for Mardi Gras festivities.

SHREVEPORT, La. — The Krewe of Gemini Mardi Gras Parade is set to captivate the streets of Shreveport this weekend with its enchanting theme, "Dreamcatcher," celebrating community spirit and tradition. The parade will roll at 3:30 p.m., starting near the Sci-Port Discovery Center and boasting over 30 colorful entries, including the illustrious Gemini XXXVI Royal Court.

This year, the royal court features Captain Gemini XXXVI Tony Richardson, King Gemini XXXVI Mike Goslin, and Queen Gemini XXXVI Janie Boydstun. Each member plays a unique role, exemplifying dedication to their community and the festivities. Tony Richardson, who hails from Pontiac, Michigan, has established himself as a cornerstone of the Krewe, dedicatively serving for over 20 years with his extensive involvement.

"After serving in the U.S. Navy and playing college football, I found my passion with the Krewe of Gemini, inspiring everyone around me during Mardi Gras," Richardson noted, stressing his commitment to enhancing the local festivities.

His counterpart, King Mike Goslin, shares the same vibrant spirit, having transitioned from his long career as a dealer and supervisor to becoming active within the Krewe since 2015. He expressed gratitude for the lifelong friendships made throughout his involvement. "I am honored to represent the Krewe of Gemini as King XXXVI," he stated proudly.

Queen Janie Boydstun brings her artistic background and educational experience to the royal court. Having been influenced by her mother's contribution to the original Krewe foundation, her work continues to uphold the enriching tradition of Mardi Gras.

Safety during the parade remains top of mind for organizers, with Shreveport police urging attendees to remain vigilant. Nearly 300 officers will be deployed along the route to monitor activities, ensuring the parade is enjoyable and safe for all participants. Cpl. Chris Bordelon emphasized the police department's readiness, saying, "You will have almost 300 officers throughout the parade route, plus the regular officers patrolling the streets, so our citizens outside of the parade don’t see any decrease in services." This includes both regular patrols and specialized units to deter incidents of underage drinking and other violations.

To enforce public safety, organizers are also introducing guidelines prohibiting glass bottles and specifying no-alcohol zones along the route. Parents and guardians are reminded to monitor their children closely, especially as festivities can sometimes lead to unruly behavior. "We ask attendees to respect the regulations and enjoy the parade responsibly," Bordelon cautioned.

For those unable to attend, the Krewe of Gemini will broadcast the parade live on KTBS 3's Facebook page, with coverage beginning at 5 p.m. Those interested can also watch the highlights show set for later in the evening on KPXJ CW 21. "You can catch a live stream of the parade on KTBS 3 Facebook," KTBS reported, providing options for everyone to partake in the excitement!

Adding to the allure, the Krewe of Gemini is renowned for tossing nearly 2 million throws each year, which include beads, toys, and even coveted specialty items. This tradition brings attendees closer together, making the Mardi Gras experience even more memorable.

Historically significant, the Krewe of Gemini stands as the first parading krewe to form during modern times for Shreveport and Bossier City, promoting Louisiana’s Mardi Gras spirit since its inception. “From the moment of its establishment, we have grown and nurtured the sense of celebration and community pride,” said one of the founding members.

The Krewe not only contributes to the cultural fabric of the region but also generates significant economic impact. According to recent estimates from the Caddo Parish Commission, the direct economic overflow from Mardi Gras parades like the Krewe of Gemini was over $9 million, with total economic impact reaching over $16 million as attendees flock to the 5.5 mile route annually. This event can attract between 300,000 to 500,000 spectators eager to participate.

With hundreds of thousands expected this weekend, Shreveport takes pride as one of the focal points of Louisiana’s famed Mardi Gras celebrations. The Krewe of Gemini Parade promises to not only catch dreams but also cultivate community joy and togetherness. So whether you’re attending live or tuning in from home, be prepared for the spirit of Mardi Gras to come alive this weekend.

Let’s celebrate safely and joyfully, sharing the unforgettable experiences this parade enriches our community with!
