Krasnoyarsk Braces For Severe Storm With High Winds

Residents urged to stay indoors and avoid open flames as storm approaches this weekend.

Krasnoyarsk is bracing for a severe storm as strong winds are forecasted to hit the region over the weekend. Residents are being urged to exercise caution, particularly regarding fire safety, as the potential for catastrophic events such as falling trees and grass fires looms large.

On April 5, 2025, and into the night of April 6, winds with gusts reaching 25-30 m/s are expected to batter Krasnoyarsk and surrounding areas. The Ministry of Emergency Situations has placed the region on high alert, signaling the seriousness of the situation. "Residents are advised to stay home if possible and avoid using open flames or burning dry grass," a spokesperson from the Ministry stated.

Meteorologists classify winds exceeding 28.5 m/s as a severe storm, which can result in significant destruction. However, forecasts suggest that Krasnoyarsk may experience slightly lower wind speeds, around 18-20 m/s, as a cyclone approaches from the west. This cyclone is anticipated to intensify the winds, bringing with it a drop in temperatures. Dmitry Ulyanov, a meteorologist from the Siberian Hydrometeorological Center, explained, "The cyclone will move into the Krasnoyarsk Territory, increasing wind speeds to dangerous levels. It will also cause a temperature drop over the weekend. On Saturday, temperatures are expected to range from +13 to +18 degrees Celsius, falling to +5 to +10 at night. By Sunday night, temperatures will average around +2 degrees Celsius, with daytime highs between +5 and +10 degrees."

In preparation for the impending storm, Krasnoyarskenergo, the local energy company, has transitioned to a state of heightened readiness. Starting from 8 PM on April 4, 2025, the company has mobilized backup power sources and emergency response teams. They have prepared 32 mobile backup power sources with a capacity of 5.1 MW to ensure that socially important facilities and the general population can maintain power during outages caused by the storm. A total of 243 emergency response teams, comprising 1,351 personnel and 819 pieces of equipment, are on standby for any necessary repairs.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations has emphasized the importance of safety during this period of severe weather. Residents are advised to stay indoors if possible and avoid standing near unstable structures or billboards that could be affected by high winds. Furthermore, the public is discouraged from engaging in outdoor activities, particularly in parks and forested areas, where the risk of falling trees is heightened. "We recommend that people refrain from walking in Tatyshev Park and the Gremyachaya Griva eco-park, as well as avoid entering the forest areas like Yudinsky Dolina and Serebryany Log," the Ministry cautioned.

As the storm approaches, the local authorities have been proactive in their communication efforts, urging residents to heed safety warnings and prepare for potential disruptions. The emergency phone number 112 has been reiterated as a critical resource for those needing assistance during this time.

In summary, as Krasnoyarsk prepares for what could be a severe storm, the emphasis remains on safety and preparedness. With strong winds expected and the potential for significant impacts on daily life, residents are reminded to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
