A new chapter for K-POP and musical theatre arrives with the SHOW MUSICAL "Dream High," which will run from April 11 to April 27, 2025, at Theatre H in Tokyo. This production, rooted in the beloved 2011 Korean drama and inspired by its spirit, has attracted significant attention from both Japanese and Korean audiences due to its star-studded cast and compelling storyline.
Set ten years after the conclusion of the original show, "Dream High" explores the lives of its characters as they face the pressures of fame and personal challenges within the entertainment industry. The central figure, Son Samdong, portrayed by acclaimed artists SE7EN, JinJin from ASTRO, and Shouta Aoi, vies for the top spot among his competitive peers, particularly his eternal rival, Jin Kyuk, played respectively by Dongwoo (INFINITE) and Riki Seto.
The narrative captures the essence of dreams through music and dance, integrating K-POP’s high-energy aesthetics with original songs and choreography. Choreographed by the prominent Choi Young-jun, known for his work with rising K-POP groups like SEVENTEEN and TWICE, the musical delivers performances reminiscent of live concerts, emphasizing dynamic dance sequences and powerful vocals.
This collaboration marks a significant moment, as three of the leading Korean cast members not only star in the Tokyo performances but will also transition seamlessly to the Korean version staged at Woori Financial Hall from April 5 to June 1, 2025. This back-to-back production showcases the cultural interchange and shared creative expressions between Japan and South Korea.
The adult characters, supporting the narrative’s youth, are portrayed by veteran performers including Kondo Masahiko and Bessho Tetsuya, who take on roles of mentorship and guidance, encapsulating the growth and struggles faced by the younger cast. The driven yet affectionately eccentric principal, played by Hasegawa Hatsunori and Otomo Kohei, adds depth and humor to the production.
Audiences can expect not only to enjoy the richly woven tales of aspiration and friendship but also to witness choreography and songs appropriate for all ages. The show's original songs and familiar tunes from the television series will enrich the experience, offering nostalgia for fans of the original program.
Tickets went on sale to fan clubs on February 1, 2025, with general sales commencing on March 8, inviting attendees to partake in this cultural explosion. The anticipation is mounting as child role auditions are also underway, promising to introduce new talent to the spotlight.
The importance of this show is underscored by its dual presentation: it is both a homage to the past and a visionary leap toward the future of live entertainment, emphasizing the importance of dream-chasing through captivating performances and team collaboration.
With its unique blend of cultural influences and artistic talent, SHOW MUSICAL "Dream High" aims to resonate deeply with audiences, fostering connections through shared dreams and artistic integrity.
