Korea University is launching its ESG-focused sustainability program, collaborating with key organizations and five other universities to nurture the next generation of leaders.
From February 4 to 5, 2024, Korea University's Global Synergy Humanities and Social Sciences Convergence Talent Development (HUSS) initiative conducted the ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) Synergy Campus Convergence Education program. This groundbreaking program, organized by Korea University, draws partnership efforts from the Economic Justice Action, economics think tank, as well as corporate involvement from Kakao, and participation from five additional universities: Kookmin University, Sunmoon University, Yengnam University, and Honam University.
The main aim of this program is to provide university students with practical experiences and insights related to sustainable management and coexistence economy, effectively preparing them for modern challenges they will surely face as future leaders. "There is great significance in the collaboration between academia, businesses, and civil society for nurturing converged talents for sustainable society," stated Lee Hye-young, Director of the HUSS Consortium at Korea University.
The two-day program consisted of lectures, field visits, and numerous opportunities for students to engage directly with experts, covering topics such as how ESG influences corporate and societal frameworks, the impact of climate change on business operations, and strategies to achieve carbon neutrality. While immersing themselves practically through these activities, students were greeted with insights from industry professionals, including those from Kakao's management team, who guided discussions around the themes of ESG and corporate management.
On the first day of the program, February 4, Korea University’s HUSS initiative officially signed agreements with the Economic Justice Institute and Kakao, marking the beginning of formal cooperation. Kyung-il Ko, Director of the Economic Justice Institute, expressed hope for the program’s impact, saying, "I hope students glean insights about the future of ESG management and fairness through this program, contributing positively to society."
Shin Hong, Kakao ESG collaboration leader, reflected on their roadshow experience, “I am very pleased to share Kakao’s ESG management philosophy with students during this meaningful event,” reinforcing the significance of corporate responsibility intertwined with education.
The program's significance lies not only in its educational offerings but also through its holistic framework, fostering an environment where theory meets practical applications. While students engage with various ESG-related topics, they are also offered guidance on internship opportunities and certificate programs related to global resource management and sustainable practices.
Currently, the HUSS consortium looks forward to conducting continuous programs over the next three years with substantial funding of 9 billion KRW from the Ministry of Education and the Korea Research Foundation, aimed at professionalizing experts in sustainability and promoting responsible resource management strategies. Preparations are underway for additional events and expansions of this curriculum to amplify its reach within the academic and wider social communities.
Overall, the ESG Synergy Campus not only builds foundational knowledge for students but also establishes pathways for networking, mentorship, and real-world application. The initiative stands as both innovative and necessary, fostering improved understandings of sustainability principles, and weaving them actively within their academic pursuits.
This program exemplifies how educational institutions can collaborate with both private sectors and civic engagement to tackle the real-world issues facing our society today.
