The Kobe Luminarie 2025 has opened its doors to the public, celebrating 30 years since the devastating Great Hanshin Earthquake with stunning light displays scattered across various locations, including Meriken Park and Higashi Yuenchi. Running from January 24 to February 2, the event, themed '30 Years of Light, Eternal Hope', features larger installations and blends tributes to the past with optimism for the future.
This year's festival has ramped up its showcase, displaying significant structures such as the 'Frontone', measuring 51 meters wide, and the 'Galleria', which stretches 79 meters long. The grand light-up ceremony had attendees reflecting on the tragedy and the resilience of the Kobe community.
'The Luminarie is not just beautiful illumination; it is important to continue its legacy of connecting to the memories of the earthquake,' said Kanon Kishi, a 23-year-old from Amagasaki, adding depth to the event's significance.
The festival contains around 410,000 light bulbs, making this year's display the largest yet, with about 70,000 more bulbs than previous years. This increment highlights the commitment by organizers to make the 30th anniversary special.
Each evening, starting at 6 PM, the lights ignite, creating a breathtaking view as families and couples stroll through the illuminated paths. According to the organizers, the event continues to attract visitors, from longtime attendees to newcomers wanting to witness the city's symbol of hope.
Aside from the major displays, smaller installations located throughout Kobe invite exploration and contribute to the celebratory atmosphere. Food fairs such as 'KOBE Delight Fountain' encourage guests to savor local culinary delights as they admire the enchanting lights.
The event also features several community activities, including performances by children, singing the Kobe city song 'Shiawase Wakeru yo ni'. These small touches of tradition weave through the festival, reminding all who participate of the collective grief and recovery.
With tickets for the illuminations available, attendees are encouraged to purchase them early, as certain time slots quickly sell out, showcasing the popularity of this annual event.
Running until February 2, the Kobe Luminarie serves as both a reflection on past sorrow and as beacons of hope for the future. Visitors from across the region come to be part of this unique celebration, paving the way for continued remembrance and renewed spirits.
This year's installations not only honor the past but also encourage new generations to carry forth the values of hope and resilience instilled through the Luminarie. If you have not had the chance yet, now is the ideal time to visit and witness this luminous tribute to the spirit of Kobe.
