Koadi Ponsse Struggles In KBO Debut But Shows Potential

Despite inconsistency, the new Hanwha Eagles pitcher adapts amidst a challenging start to the season.

Koadi Ponsse, the new foreign pitcher for the Hanwha Eagles, made his official KBO debut on March 22, 2025, at Suwon KT Wiz Park, facing the KT Wiz in the opening game of the season. The anticipation around Ponsse had been heightened due to his remarkable performance in spring training, where he threw 9 innings across 2 games without giving up a run and tallying 10 strikeouts.

In the regular season opener, Ponsse completed 5 innings, allowing 7 hits, 1 walk, and 2 runs, while striking out 4 batters. Although he showcased a fastball that reached a maximum speed of 155km/h, his outing was marked by inconsistency early on, as he allowed the first run in the first inning through a double hit by Kang Baek-ho. The run came after Ponsse struck out Mel Rojas Jr. and got Heo Kyung-min to ground out, but then succumbed to a hit by Kim Min-hyuk that brought Kang home.

In the second inning, things didn't improve for Ponsse as he issued a walk to Moon Sang-cheol, who advanced to third courtesy of a wild pitch, and later fell victim to a sacrifice fly by Bae Jeong-dae that resulted in another run. This information was well captured in reports, with clear accounts of Ponsse's efforts facing a formidable KT lineup.

Despite these challenges, Ponsse demonstrated resilience. He managed to strike out the side after allowing a couple of hits in the third inning. He also forged on amidst a pitch clock violation against Moon Sang-cheol, marking the first such violation in the league this season. This little hiccup, nonetheless, did not derail him as he ended the inning without further damage.

At one point in the game, the pace settled, and Ponsse found a rhythm as he closed the fourth inning with consecutive ground outs from Cheon Seong-ho and Bae Jeong-dae. Even in the fifth inning, Ponsse faced adversity yet escaped unscathed, coaxing a double play from Kim Min-hyuk after allowing a couple of hits. His efforts helped the Eagles remain competitive, with the score standing at 1-2 as he concluded his outing.

Ponsse's performance drew mixed reviews. While he was deemed to have not fulfilled the impressive expectations placed on him, especially after enjoying a stellar pre-season, his coach Kim Kyung-moon expressed reassurance about his potential to adapt swiftly to KBO standards. Hanwha Eagles had signed Ponsse under a $1 million contract, which consisted of an $800,000 salary and a $200,000 signing bonus, collaborating with Ryan Weiss to anchor their starting rotation.

Prior to joining the Eagles, the 31-year-old pitcher had played in Major League Baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates and in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). The extensive experience has fueled hopes that he can continue his development and rise to the occasion in subsequent starts.

On the other side, KT's starting pitcher, Hayes, provided an exemplary performance, striking out 7 and yielding just 2 hits and a single run across 6 innings. His ability to maintain a solid presence on the mound while keeping the Eagles' hitters at bay illustrated the brewing competition each team faces within the KBO this season. The pressure is already building as expectations remain high on both sides.

KT Wiz manager Lee Kang-chul, proud of his squad's preparedness, was optimistic prior to the match. “We will have to overcome (Ponsse), as he is an accomplished pitcher,” he remarked, indicating the advantage his players had gained through pre-season preparations.

As the game went on and Hanwha appeared to rally in the late innings, tying the game 2-2 by the seventh and forcing a tighter competitive contest, fans were reminded of the strong foundation that both teams have aimed to establish this season. The emotional ups and downs, underlined by fans’ cheers and the tension on both benches, reflected the spirit of Korean baseball.

In the end, while the Eagles faced setbacks, the emergence of players like Ponsse alongside the core team reflects a shared ambition for success this season. Both competitors are ready to showcase their growth in a league that continues to evolve, promising a thrilling season for fans and players alike.
