Klagenfurt Mountain Rescue Team Responds To Four Emergencies

A weekend of outdoor activities leads to multiple rescue operations across challenging terrains.

On May 1, 2025, the Klagenfurt mountain rescue team was called into action for a series of demanding operations that tested their skills and coordination. The first incident occurred during an archery festival, where a participant suffered a knee injury in difficult terrain, suspected to be a dislocated kneecap. The mountain rescue team quickly arrived on the scene, providing first aid alongside the emergency medical service. Utilizing a special stretcher known as the Thyromonttrage, they navigated the challenging landscape to transport the injured woman to an ambulance.

Later that same day, another call came in reporting a riding accident on the Ehrenbichler Berg. A participant had fallen from a horse, prompting an immediate response from the mountain rescue team. Thanks to the rapid deployment of the ÖAMTC air rescue helicopter, designated "C11," the injured individual was swiftly evacuated from the site, showcasing the effectiveness of the emergency response efforts.

The following day, on May 2, 2025, the mountain rescue team faced another challenge during the traditional Vierbergelauf, a popular mountain running event. A participant experienced a medical emergency, likely a circulatory collapse, and was unable to continue the race. With a helicopter rescue deemed impossible according to the LAWZ, fellow hikers, paramedics, and members of the mountain rescue team, who were also participating in the event, sprang into action. The patient was carried to a nearby clearing where she was subsequently picked up by the emergency helicopter "Christophorus 11," ensuring she received the necessary medical attention.

As if the events of May 1 and 2 weren’t enough, the mountain rescue team was once again called to action on May 4, 2025, due to a mountain biking accident in the Zillhöhe area on the Kreuzbergl. A female biker sustained a leg injury that left her unable to walk. The rescue team organized access to the site and stabilized her leg using a vacuum splint. Employing the Thyromonttrage once again, they transported her to a prearranged meeting point where she was handed over to the Red Cross for further medical assistance.

Throughout this demanding weekend, the Klagenfurt mountain rescue team expressed their gratitude for the seamless collaboration with the Red Cross, the police, and the ÖAMTC air rescue team. In a statement, they acknowledged the efforts of all involved, saying, "Thank you to the Red Cross, the police, and the ÖAMTC air rescue team for the perfect cooperation during this challenging weekend. We wish all the injured a swift and complete recovery." This sentiment reflects the camaraderie and dedication of the emergency services that come together in times of crisis, ensuring that those in need receive prompt and effective care.

The series of incidents over the weekend highlights not only the risks associated with outdoor activities but also the importance of having well-coordinated emergency response teams ready to act. As the outdoor season continues, the Klagenfurt mountain rescue team remains vigilant, prepared to assist those who may find themselves in distress while enjoying the beauty and challenges of the mountains.

With the archery festival, the Vierbergelauf, and mountain biking all part of the vibrant outdoor culture in the region, the community is reminded of the potential dangers that can accompany such activities. The quick response and effective rescue operations carried out by the mountain rescue team serve as a reassuring reminder that help is always at hand, no matter how remote the location.

As the weather warms and more people venture into the wilderness for recreation, the Klagenfurt mountain rescue team encourages participants to prioritize safety and be aware of their surroundings. They remind everyone to prepare adequately for outdoor activities, carry the necessary equipment, and understand the risks involved. The commitment of the rescue team to their mission is unwavering, and they stand ready to assist whenever needed.
