King Willem-Alexander And Queen Máxima Launch Koningsspelen

Over a million students participate in the thirteenth edition of the event promoting exercise and play

On Thursday morning, April 17, 2025, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima inaugurated the national opening of the Koningsspelen at the KPO De Vlindertuin primary school in Roosendaal. This festive occasion was attended by NPO Zapp presenters Britt Dekker and Ron Boszhard, who added to the excitement of the day.

The Koningsspelen, which translates to "King's Games," are designed to promote exercise, sport, and play among children. This year marks the thirteenth edition of the event, which has grown significantly since its inception. Over a million primary school students from across the Netherlands, the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, and Dutch schools abroad are participating in this year’s activities.

Traditionally, the Koningsspelen kick off with a communal breakfast known as the Koningsontbijt. This breakfast serves as a precursor to the various sports and games that follow throughout the day. The theme for this year's event is "TWIST!"—a call for schools and children to add a unique twist to their celebrations, whether through small adjustments or more significant changes that encourage movement and fun.

"The idea is to inspire creativity and encourage children to think outside the box while being active," said a spokesperson for the event. Schools participating in the Koningsspelen have the freedom to determine how they will celebrate the day, allowing for a variety of interpretations of the theme.

To assist schools in their preparations, each institution receives a Sport- and Feestpakket, which includes game ideas, an online exercise program, and resources to connect with local sports providers. Additionally, a free breakfast is provided to ensure that students start their day energized and ready for activities.

The Koningsspelen were first organized in 2013 as part of the inauguration of King Willem-Alexander, with the goal of highlighting the importance of healthy eating and physical activity for children and their parents. Since then, the event has become a beloved tradition in Dutch culture.

As part of the festivities, the song "Baila bailalaa" by Kinderen voor Kinderen will be played, setting an energetic tone for the day. This catchy tune is expected to resonate with the children and add to the celebratory atmosphere.

Queen Máxima, who is always a focal point of these events, made a stylish appearance this year in grey trousers paired with a green leather top from Natan, complemented by a matching grey cape. Her fashion choices often draw attention and reflect her commitment to the event.

The Koningsspelen not only foster a sense of community and togetherness among students but also emphasize the importance of physical activity in a fun and engaging manner. With the participation of over a million children, the event highlights the collective effort to promote a healthier lifestyle among the youth of the Netherlands.

As the day unfolds, schools across the country will engage in various sporting activities, showcasing their creativity and enthusiasm. The Koningsspelen serve as a reminder of the joy of play and the significance of exercise in children's lives.

In conclusion, the Koningsspelen continue to be a significant event in the Dutch calendar, bringing together children from various backgrounds to celebrate health, sport, and community. With a theme that encourages innovation and movement, this year’s festivities are set to inspire the next generation of active citizens.
