King Felipe VI: Europe's Most Valued Leader

Recent findings highlight Felipe VI's popularity amid crises and modernization efforts.

King Felipe VI of Spain has recently emerged as the most valued European leader, as per the latest barometer published by the Real Instituto Elcano. This survey, conducted among 5,809 participants across ten European countries, reveals Felipe VI's high approval ratings, highlighting his presence as steadfast during challenging times, and contrasting starkly with other political figures.

According to the barometer, Felipe VI secured an overall score of 5.5 out of 10 on his popularity from respondents aged 18 to 80, surveyed between September 25 and October 21, 2023. He surpasses renowned figures such as Pope Francis, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, UK’s King Charles III, and French President Emmanuel Macron. Notably, Romania ranks as the nation showing the highest admiration for him, with Felipe receiving a score of 6.9.

The Real Instituto Elcano report indicates this high valuation isn’t mere coincidence but stems from strategic decisions and actions taken by Felipe VI, which have gradually shaped the public's perception. Manuel Vilas, the Galician writer and columnist, noted, “Fue un día señalado para la monarquía,” reflecting on the significance of Felipe’s actions during moments of crisis. When disaster struck the Valencian community due to the DANA, Felipe VI embraced the situation, choosing to remain on-site among the residents, earning their respect even amid initial hostility.

During this visit to Paiporta, one of the most affected areas, Felipe VI's approach stood in stark opposition to President Pedro Sánchez, who faced public backlash and left the region early. Clad simply and empathetically, the King displayed patience and willingness to connect with local citizens, converting initial rejection to warm embraces. This garnered him comparisons with historical figures like Adolfo Suárez, recognized for his courage during the attempted coup on February 23, 1981.

Since his proclamation as King, Felipe VI has navigated through numerous trials and tribulations testing his leadership. His decisive address during the Catalan independence referendum of 2017 elicited mixed reactions but established him firmly within the national narrative. The aftermath of terrorist attacks, the COVID-19 pandemic, and natural disasters have seen the King take on roles as the nation’s uniting force, contrasting significantly with the image presented by Spain's political leaders.

Modernization has been key to Felipe VI's image. Alongside his wife, Queen Letizia, he has made considerable strides to refresh the royal family's image, addressing contemporary societal needs. From focusing on education and scientific advancement to sustainability concerns, their partnership symbolizes hope and progress within the monarchy.

Felipe VI's positioning at international forums marks his role as one of Spain's leading diplomatic voices. Recently, his visit to Italy showcased his importance within the European Union framework, where he met with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President Sergio Mattarella, reinforcing Spain's ties with Italy amid rising tensions within the EU.

The King’s presence during official events attended by Latin American leaders has also underscored his significance as a cultural bridge, and his respect has cemented Spain’s diplomatic relationships across the Atlantic, evident during the recent presidential inaugurations attended across the region.

Interestingly, the Real Instituto Elcano’s findings reveal stark differences between the popularity of King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Sánchez. While Felipe VI comfortably occupies fifth place among the Spaniards known worldwide, Sánchez struggles to even claim a top-ten position among European leaders, highlighting the King's global outreach and appeals.

Public perception of the monarchy appears to be on the upswing. According to the same barometer, 54% of Spaniards now believe Felipe VI has succeeded in strengthening the institution, marking a 20-point increase over four years. This economic and political climate, muddled with distrust toward politicians, has resulted in Felipe VI’s image solidifying as one of stability and unity.

From challenging historical contexts to present-day expectations, Felipe VI continues adapting and responding to societal shifts. With the Spanish monarchy facing difficulties, the King's ability to resonate with citizens is uncertain. Yet, with his consistent presence during times of adversity, combined with the modernizing vision of Queen Letizia, Felipe VI has stitched himself firmly as one of Europe’s most approachable monarchs, intertwining power with empathy.

The combination of strategic public appearances, empathetic outreach during crises, and the modernization of royal image efforts has positioned King Felipe VI as not just the most valued European leader but also as a pillar of stability within the uncertain political climate.
