Kim Huybrechts Eliminated Early From 2025 World Darts Championship

Belgian star suffers setback against Keane Barry, reflecting on tough year.

Kim Huybrechts' hopes of advancing at the 2025 World Darts Championship were abruptly dashed as he fell to Keane Barry, the world’s number 52, with a score of 3-1 on the opening day at Alexandra Palace, London. Huybrechts, once ranked among the top players, has battled considerable challenges leading up to this event. Despite showing flashes of brilliance early on, it wasn't enough to overcome the Irishman's hard-hitting performances.

The match began with Huybrechts taking the first set, and fans were hopeful. He started strong and enjoyed early success with one remarkable leg where he threw back-to-back 180s, showcasing his potential. His early lead suggested he might have finally turned the tide against Barry, who had beaten him 4-0 previously. "An uppercut," Huybrechts described the loss afterward, signifying the impact this defeat had on his morale.

Yet, after the initial set, the momentum shifted dramatically. Huybrechts struggled to maintain his scoring consistency. Despite his efforts, the champion's ability to capitalize on every opportunity was evident. Barry proved to be unyielding, and Huybrechts couldn’t find the double shots he desperately needed, leading to losses in the next three sets. Huybrechts remarked, "I've never trained as hard, but now I think, 'why?'" indicative of his frustration with the outcome.

Huybrechts' exit marks not just another early disappointment, as his previous year's campaign also ended swiftly. His season was marred by distractions inflicted by both personal and professional hurdles, including public disputes with fellow Belgian dart player Mike De Decker and even physical setbacks such as breaking his collarbone following altercations after soccer games.

Analysts like Erik Clarys have noted the considerable pressure on Huybrechts to perform well during this championship. "On paper, he had the most arduous draw among the Belgians," he suggested, highlighting the differences between Huybrechts and his compatriots. Clarys pointed out the comradeship and competitive gloom surrounding Huybrechts, especially contrasted with the success of De Decker and the seasoned player Van den Bergh.

Still, not all is bleak for Belgian darts. The impressive accomplishments of players like De Decker, who secured his first major title at the World Grand Prix earlier this year, have brought some light to Belgium's darting fate. De Decker's exploits have been impressive enough to generate discussions about his potential invitation to next season's Premier League, if he continues this upward trend.

Meanwhile, Van den Bergh’s situation is particularly delicate as well. Known for his prowess and as the nation's number one, he faces mounting pressure to defend his ranking following inconsistent performances throughout the year. Experts have voiced uncertainty about his prospects, with some expecting him to exit earlier than anticipated as he balances injuries and performance highs and lows.

Huybrechts' departure has left many wondering if this could be the last opportunity to see him contest at such high levels again. His performance at the EuroTour earlier this year gave him some footing back, but advancing to the latter rounds of major tournaments seemingly remains elusive.

Despite this setback, some experts have noted, "It wouldn't surprise me if Huybrechts became the surprise of the tournament," indicating there still lies potential within the seasoned player. Huybrechts re-entered his training regime fervently, reminding fans and critics alike of what he can achieve when at his best. Yet, for now, his championship dream has halted far too soon.

Kim Huybrechts' disappointing early exit at the 2025 World Darts Championship serves as both a personal and professional wake-up call. With two fellow Belgians still competing, all eyes now turn to them as they carry the national flag forward, hoping to build on the highs achieved during this turbulent year for Belgium's darts scene.
