Kim Ha-seong Faces Uncertain Future As MLB Free Agent

Following shoulder surgery, the talented infielder grapples with injury impacts as he seeks new contract opportunities.

With the 2025 MLB free agency period on the horizon, Kim Ha-seong finds himself at a crossroads. The talented infielder has entered the free agent market after four seasons with the San Diego Padres but is grappling with the repercussions of shoulder surgery he underwent last October.

Ha-seong, 30, made headlines during the 2023 season by securing the National League Gold Glove as the first Asian player recognized as a utility infielder. His strong defensive skills across multiple positions—shortstop, second base, and third base—combined with decent offensive stats, initially set high expectations for his free agency. Reports speculated he could command a contract worth over $100 million, surpassing the previous deal established by fellow Korean player Choo Shin-soo.

Unfortunately, his 2024 season suffered due to an injury sustained last August, which sidelined him for significant time, raising questions about his throwing strength—previously considered one of his greatest assets. "His shoulder injury raised doubts about his arm strength, turning his greatest strength...into his most questioned ability," reported Sports Hankook.

When comparing his situation with another notable player entering free agency, Lee Jung-hoo, who secured a record 6-year, $113 million deal with the San Francisco Giants without having set foot on MLB turf before, it paints Ha-seong’s circumstance as starkly different. Lee’s impressive batting stats from KBO League put him in favor, whereas Ha-seong's injury-laden season has clouded his marketability.

Despite his previous accolades, MLB teams seem hesitant. While teams have expressed some interest, the competitive league's dynamic has seen several clubs finalize contracts with other infielders. "Many teams showed interest...but some teams have already signed other players," noted My Daily.

The New York Yankees have emerged as potential contenders for Ha-seong. Following Gleyber Torres' move to the Detroit Tigers, he could fill the gap based on need, especially being renowned for his defensive capabilities. Other speculated options include the Tampa Bay Rays and Milwaukee Brewers, but these also lean toward one-year contracts due to his recent injury history.

MLB.com evaluated Ha-seong's skill saying, "He is recognized as one of the best defensive shortstops," and also mentioned the defensive success he maintained during his tenure, with impressive noted stats; he achieved 23 Outs Above Average throughout four seasons.

Despite the uncertain outlook, there are indications of hope for Ha-seong's return to Major League Baseball as he aims to recover and regain peak form. Scouting reports remain favorable, portraying his work ethic and versatility as significant assets. Team officials have indicated they could be willing to overlook his health struggles for the right skills on the field.

Local media have speculated about the possibility of Ha-seong staying with the Padres, emphasizing the Padres may require him as they look to move on from other, high-priced players like Xander Bogaerts. Following the New York-based media reports, the San Diego Union-Tribune remarked, "Ha-seong's departure from the Padres seems likely, but other teams may lead to his return".

Ha-seong is now more focused on making his recovery—targeting the opening of the 2025 season. If he can achieve full fitness and demonstrate he can still produce at the elite level, he may still command the lucrative contract expected prior to his injury. Reports speculate he could land on a shorter deal due to diminished value post-surgery.

"They believe he could land a one-year contract as concerns increase," said NJ.com, underscoring the current reality facing Ha-seong.

Despite the uncertainty, there remains optimism about what the future holds for Kim Ha-seong. While the shadow of injury looms large, his past performances offer hope, and many baseball fans are waiting to see what this off-season might bring.
