Kia America has announced the recall of over 80,000 Niro vehicles due to serious safety concerns involving the airbag and seatbelt systems. The issue arises from the potential for damage to the wiring located beneath the front passenger seat. A total of 80,225 Niro SUVs are impacted by this recall, with the distribution of affected models detailed as follows: 49,535 Hybrid models made from June 21, 2022, to December 17, 2024; 8,811 Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) models made from July 11, 2022, to December 16, 2024; and 21,909 Electric Niro models manufactured between August 10, 2022, and December 13, 2024.
Concerned owners will be notified by Kia on March 14, 2025, about the necessary inspection and potential repairs to their vehicles, as communicated by the automaker on January 17, 2025. This proactive notification follows the company's established protocol for recalling defective vehicles.
The root of the problem lies within the floor wiring assembly beneath the front passenger seat, which can degrade from the frequent adjustments of the seat itself.
