DAKAR, Senegal — Khaby Lame, the Senegal-born world's most popular TikTok personality, has officially taken on a new role as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. The announcement came during his visit to his native country on February 2, 2025, where he addressed the youth and voiced his commitment to using his influence to advocate for children's rights worldwide.
At just 24 years old, Lame has made waves on social media with over 162 million followers, captivating audiences with his silent yet expressive comedic reaction videos. His ascent to fame surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he lost his job at a factory, allowing him the time to create and post more content. Now, as UNICEF’s ambassador, Lame aims to shine a spotlight on the various challenges faced by children globally.
“It’s a true honor to be appointed as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador and be part of an organization that's puts children’s rights front and center every day,” said Lame during his appointment. He continued, sharing his personal experiences: “From my own experience as a child fearing poverty, struggling to find my passion at school, and losing my job during the COVID-19 pandemic, to finding my place and calling in the world, I know all children can thrive when they are giving chance and opportunity.”
Sitting at the crossroads of arranged opportunities, Lame's upbringing resonates deeply with many Senegalese youth, particularly since over 60% of the population is under 25. The country has seen many individuals resort to irregular migration to Europe due to socioeconomic challenges, with 90% of Senegal's workforce engaged in informal jobs. Throughout his career, Lame has inspired followers to dream big, often encouraging them to overcome obstacles they face.
“I tell them to dream big,” he emphasized, recalling the importance of resilience. “Try and do your best to accomplish your dreams, even though there are people telling you cannot reach them.” His message of hope is especially pertinent when framed against the backdrop of persistent struggles faced by many young people today.
During his four-day visit, Lame connected with children driving change within their communities. His engagements included meeting street children at shelters, participating in sports, and listening to the challenges faced by those who have fled violence and exploitation. Lame’s heartfelt approach is expected to resonate well with young people as he champions causes such as inclusive education, empowerment, health access, and protection from violence.
Among his efforts, Lame explored the realities of inclusive education during his visit to Ziguinchor, Casamance, where he interacted with children with disabilities, learning how assistive technologies facilitate their education.
Further showcasing his commitment to advocacy, Lame attended workshops aimed at empowering out-of-school girls through STEM education, leadership training, and innovation skills. These initiatives are part of efforts to equip young girls with tools to combat gender-based violence and gain access to economic opportunities.
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell expressed her enthusiasm about Lame joining the organization's family, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome Khaby Lame to the UNICEF family as Goodwill Ambassador...His creativity and unique perspective on the world have inspired hundreds of millions of followers and will continue to motivate others to speak up and tell their stories.”
Lame's role will be pivotal as he leverages his global platforms to advocate for children's rights, including education, health, nutrition, and protection from violence and abuse. His involvements aim to illuminate the myriad challenges faced by children and engage communities to be active participants in the quest for solutions.
With his appointment, Lame joins the ranks of notable UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors such as David Beckham, Priyanka Chopra, and Leo Messi. These influential figures, alongside Lame, represent the organization's commitment to advocating for the rights of children worldwide.
Reflecting on his experiences and excited for the road ahead, Lame conveyed his eagerness to meet more innovators and young leaders. “During my time in Senegal with UNICEF, I’ve met many young people who are standing up in their communities and making change,” he said. “I’m excited to meet many more young inspirational leaders and innovators in my new role with UNICEF.” His statement serves as both a promise and motivation for himself and those he seeks to uplift, consolidifying his role as both ambassador and advocate for the next generation.
