The basketball community mourns the loss of Kevin Braswell, a former NBL champion and respected coach, who passed away after heart surgery.

The basketball world is mourning the loss of Kevin Braswell, the former player and coach who made significant contributions to the sport both in New Zealand and abroad. Braswell passed away at the age of 46, with his death confirmed on Tuesday by the Utsunomiya Brex, the Japanese team he was coaching at the time.

Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Braswell was known for his exceptional skills as both a player and coach. He spent his early playing years at Georgetown University, where he built up a strong resume with the Hoyas from 1998 to 2002, averaging 13.6 points over 128 games. His professional career took him to various countries, including but not limited to the United States, Italy, Turkey, and Russia, but it was his time in New Zealand and coaching roles back home where he truly made his mark.

Braswell first joined the New Zealand Breakers for the 2010-2011 NBL season, where he quickly became integral to their success. He averaged 10.2 points, 4.2 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game during his championship-winning season. His most notable performance came during the Grand Final against the Cairns Taipans, where he scored 18 points, solidifying his role as the team’s Best Sixth Man.

After his playing career, which also included stints with teams such as the Melbourne Tigers and the Southland Sharks, Braswell transitioned to coaching with the Wellington Saints, leading them to championship wins in 2016 and 2017. He quickly gained recognition for his leadership qualities and tactical knowledge of the game.

Kevin Braswell returned to the Breakers as head coach for the 2018 season, working to advance the team’s legacy. His contributions to the New Zealand basketball community were widely recognized, leading to numerous tributes following his passing. New Zealand Breakers shared their heartfelt sentiments via social media, saying, "Today we mourn the passing of Breakers legend Kevin Braswell. KB, a former player, championship winner, Sixth Man of the Year, and head coach passed away overnight. Our thoughts and aroha go out to his family at this time."

Despite his success and popularity, Braswell's life was tragically cut short. Earlier this year, he underwent heart surgery, which led to complications requiring hospitalization. His death surprised many and invoked deep respect for the man who had dedicated so much to the sport he loved. The Utsunomiya Brex, his latest team, expressed their grief, stating, "We would like to express our heartfelt respect and gratitude to Mr. Braswell for his dedication to the development of the club and his contribution to the growth of the team over the course of two seasons. We will miss him dearly."

Reacting to the news of his untimely passing, fellow players, coaches, and fans from New Zealand, Australia, and the United States shared condolences. His reputation as one of the most respected figures within the New Zealand basketball community was well established, and his influence will be missed by many. According to the NBL, "Kevin Braswell was one of the most loved and respected figures in the New Zealand basketball community," underscoring the impact he had on those who played alongside him or under his guidance.

Throughout his playing career, Braswell was not only known for scoring prowess but also for his ability to uplift teammates and lead by example. His jersey number 12 is retired by the Southland Sharks, commemorative of his contributions to the team alongside multiple NZNBL titles.

Now, as we look back at Kevin Braswell's life and career, we can appreciate the legacy he leaves behind. His dedication to developing young talent, commitment to playing the game with integrity, and passion for basketball will continue to inspire future generations. The league sends its deepest condolences to the Braswell family during this challenging time.
