Kendal Sea Cadets Honor VE Day With Beacon Lighting Ceremony

The local community gathers to celebrate peace and remembrance at Kendal Castle

The Kendal Sea Cadets took part in a beacon lighting ceremony as part of VE Day celebrations. Held at Kendal Castle, the Sea Cadets Band played before a temporary beacon was lit as a symbol of peace and hope. The ceremony was part of four days of national celebration to mark 80 years since VE Day 1945.

Civilian Instructor Nicola Brooks expressed her pride in the event, stating, "Last night was incredible to witness, listening to our band play, seeing our cadets and the army cadets lining the castle, leading up to Warrant Officer Andy Edgar RNR stood proud at the top of the castle playing the bugle. Our cadets were honoured to be asked to take part in something so special, being chosen to pay their respects to the incredible service people who gave their todays for our tomorrows." This heartfelt tribute resonated with many attendees, highlighting the significance of the occasion.

The beacon lighting served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during World War II, symbolizing peace and hope for the future. The public was encouraged to bring their own torches and lights to create a ‘visual tribute’ that would be visible across the town, enhancing the communal spirit of the celebration.

As part of the festivities, the Sea Cadets have planned a day of celebration in Abbot Hall Park on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 10 AM to 4 PM. This event will feature a live band, BBQ, games, and a raffle, inviting the community to come together in joy and remembrance.
