Ken Paxton Eyes Senate Run Against John Cornyn

Texas Attorney General signals possible challenge amid GOP divisions.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is reportedly considering a run for the U.S. Senate, potentially challenging long-serving Senator John Cornyn. This potential contest highlights the growing divisions within the Texas Republican Party as it heads toward the primary elections scheduled for March 2026.

Paxton, known for his vocal support of former President Donald Trump and his hardline conservative stance, has increasingly expressed dissatisfaction with Cornyn’s record, categorizing him as insufficiently conservative. During recent remarks to Republican Party members in Denton County, Paxton stated emphatically, “The second thing we need to do, and I might play a role in this, is replace John Cornyn in the U.S. Senate.” This pronouncement garnered enthusiastic applause from attendees, showcasing backing among grassroots activists.

While speaking of his political ambitions, Paxton indicated to FOX News Digital, “Despite loving what I’m doing... I’m looking potentially at the U.S. Senate.” The Attorney General plans to spend the next few months engaging with voters, donors, and party activists throughout Texas to gauge interest and support for his candidacy.

Paxton’s relationship with Trump could also significantly influence his decision to run. A source close to him mentioned, “A deciding factor for Paxton could be if his close ally and friend, President Donald Trump, would throw his support behind a primary challenge for Cornyn.” Paxton’s hints at running have increased since his acquittal from impeachment charges linked to his activities as attorney general. It’s noted he has openly questioned Cornyn's contributions as senator, stating, “I can’t think of a single thing he’s accomplished for our state or even for the country.”

On the other side, Cornyn has made it clear he intends to run for re-election and has bolstered his position as one of the Texas GOP’s pivotal figures, having served since 2002 with numerous successes under his belt. He has not lost an election and has held several influential roles, including working as the Senate majority whip. Cornyn remains popular throughout the state as he maintains comprehensive engagement with Texas constituents. He recently declared, “Our first and most urgent task is to confirm President Trump’s nominees for his Cabinet,” underscoring his alignment with the former president's agenda.

The brewing battle reflects broader tensions between the traditional establishment Republicans like Cornyn and the more aligned MAGA faction represented by Paxton. Political strategist Matt Mackowiak explained the stakes: “The big question is whether Trump would support Paxton over Cornyn.” His views encapsulate the uncertainty facing the Republican Party as it navigates its identity and constituent desires heading to the 2026 elections. Mackowiak pointed out, “Cornyn’s never lost a race,” which positionally places him at the forefront against potentially formidable grassroots backing for Paxton.

Adding dimension to this potential primary, observers note it could swell to significant national attention, paralleling notable primary elections of the past. “If Paxton runs, it would be massive with national consequences,” Mackowiak stated, pointing to Texas as representing wider GOP ideological battles and opportunities. If both candidates draw on their supporter bases effectively, this contest might be one of the biggest GOP primaries this election season.

With the 2026 elections encompassing several pivotal statewide votes beyond just the Senate seat, the stakes couldn't be higher for both contenders. Amid this complex and often volatile political background, Texas Republicans face tests of loyalty, ideology, and strategy as they prepare for what could become one of the most watched primaries in years.
