Kelsea Ballerini Balances Touring And Coaching On The Voice

With a busy schedule and advocacy for mental health, the singer emerges as a role model in country music.

Kelsea Ballerini is on top of her game these days as she is simultaneously headlining her first tour and knocking it out of the park each week as a coach on NBC's The Voice. The talented country star is managing a busy schedule, blending her tour commitments with her role on the popular reality show.

Recently, Ballerini opened up about how she navigates the overwhelming pace of her life. In her own words, she said, "It's hard. It's really hard, actually. I feel like I've learned over the last few years that it's really good for me to like to get really busy and sprint and then have a week where I can just decompress and think about it." Her reflections illustrate the balance she strives for amidst a hectic lifestyle.

During a performance of her song "Penthouse," the crowd erupted into chants about her ex-husband, Morgan Evans. Ballerini took a firm stand, stopping her performance to address the audience directly. "You have to stop that. Seriously. We're three years past it. Everything's fine now. I sing this song for you now. It's not about me anymore. Please. Please," she urged. This moment showcased not only her commitment to her music but also her desire to foster a positive atmosphere at her events.

Ballerini may have faced challenges in the spotlight, especially following her divorce from Evans in late 2022. The couple, who first met while co-hosting Australia’s Country Music Channel Awards in 2016, were married for five years, and many of Ballerini’s songs on her album Rolling Up The Welcome Mat reflect the feelings surrounding their breakup.

On The Voice, Ballerini has proven to be a supportive coach, recently praising rising artists Jaelen Johnston, 21, and Hailey Wright, 19, for their powerful rendition of Brooks & Dunn's iconic song "Neon Moon." Following their performance, Ballerini beamed, "I’m giddy" and expressed pride in how both artists delivered the heartfelt ballad. Fellow coaches Michael Bublé, John Legend, and Adam Levine all praised the performers too, contributing to an inspiring atmosphere.

When Ballerini had to choose a winner from the battle, she ultimately named Johnston, highlighting his unique vocal presence. "Jaelen just has that thing where, as soon as he started singing, even the audience reacted. Like, he has a reactive voice. You can’t explain it. It’s like lightning in a bottle," she remarked. Despite this, she felt strongly about Wright's talent and decided to save her from elimination, saying, "I just had that feeling when Hailey was walking off the stage where I was like, ‘I can’t.’" This decision underscored her commitment to fostering talent.

As she approaches a major milestone, her first headlining arena tour stop at LA's Crypto.com Arena on March 21, Ballerini reflects on her journey and the influence of her surroundings. She stated, "I think shows in cities like that, especially where I have so many friends—I’ve gotten to spend so much time in LA... it’s been really beautiful." Performing in front of familiar faces motivates her to bring her best performance.

Taking on the role of a coach on The Voice has also been an adventure for Ballerini. Initially feeling intimidated by the star-studded panel alongside Levine, Legend, and Bublé, she described the encouragement she received from the other coaches. "They really rallied around me. We formed a group chat on day one, and there was not a single day that we left set without someone sending a message like, ‘Great job today,’ or ‘That was an amazing artist you got.’" Their camaraderie made her transition into this new role smoother.

Inspiringly, Ballerini reached out to Kelly Clarkson for advice after getting the coaching offer. Clarkson, herself a former contestant on a singing competition, shared her wisdom, emphasizing the importance of uplifting the contestants. Ballerini cherishes this guidance and aims to promote a positive experience for everyone involved.

Balancing her hectic schedule of tour dates and her coaching role has shown Ballerini the beauty of complexity in her professional life. She humorously referred to it as "a beautiful chaos." Her adaptability shines through, as she even watches episodes of The Voice before heading on stage herself, amplifying the surreal nature of her rapidly changing world.

Turning 30 has also marked a significant transition for Ballerini. "I think my Saturn return kicked my butt a little bit," she admitted, reflecting on the personal growth that comes with this milestone. She feels less burdened by societal expectations, particularly as a woman in country music, allowing her to embrace authenticity.

Moreover, she has taken on the cause of mental health advocacy seriously, raising nearly $100,000 for the Feel Your Way Through Foundation. She has openly discussed her struggles with anxiety and self-doubt, using her platform to destigmatize mental health issues. "Not everyone has access, whether financially or otherwise, and I want to make sure that one of the things I do in the world is not just put out music, but really advocate and try to help people," she said.

As Ballerini continues to make waves, she has also become the youngest member of the Grand Ole Opry in its nearly 100-year history, underscoring her impact on the genre. This year, she will participate in the Opry 100 special, celebrating the venue's centenary. Fans will be able to catch this historic event live on NBC and Peacock on March 19.

Ultimately, Ballerini's journey, whether on stage or through coaching, reflects her commitment to her craft and the emotional connections she fosters through her music. She hopes to resonate deeply with her audience, stating, "I just want people to get whatever they want out of it." Whether delivering empowering messages or evoking raw emotions, Ballerini aims to ensure everyone feels seen through her artistry.
