KBS Veteran Journalist Ryu Geun-chan Passes Away

Renowned anchor and politician remembered for his extensive contributions to South Korean media and politics.

Ryu Geun-chan, a prominent figure at KBS Public Broadcasting Corporation and former lawmaker, has passed away at the age of 76. Ryu was recognized for his influential roles as both a journalist and politician throughout his storied career.

Born on February 26, 1949, Ryu began his professional life as one of KBS's first public relations journalists when the network opened its doors. He quickly made his mark, serving as the head of the political news division before assuming the prestigious position of Washington correspondent. He returned to South Korea, where he became the anchor of major KBS news programs, including 'KBS News Plaza' and 'KBS News9' from 1992 to 1998.

Ryu's contributions to journalism earned him recognition and accolades, including being named the second most influential journalist by Sisa Journal in 1997. His reputation was built on the integrity and professionalism he exhibited during his years behind the anchor desk during significant events, covering everything from national political change to international affairs.

His political career was equally impactful. After serving as the media advisor to Kim Jong-pil, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, Ryu made his political debut when he was elected to the National Assembly as part of the party in 2004, representing the Chungcheongnam-do region. He successfully secured his position again during the 2008 legislative elections, reinforcing his foothold within the political spectrum, and contributing to discussions around media and governance.

Ryu Geun-chan's passing was announced by family members who confirmed the news from the funeral home at Samsung Medical Center. He is survived by his wife, Jo Young-soon; his children, Hee, who heads the Be and Bright Eye Clinic, and Min-hee, who works as a simultaneous interpreter; as well as his son-in-law, Kim Seok-hwan, who holds the position of Vice President at Wemade.

The ceremony to honor Ryu is planned to take place at Samsung Medical Center, as his family prepares to say their goodbyes. The funeral service is scheduled for noon on February 28, 2025, at the Korea Memorial Park, located within the serene setting of the Jin-dalrae Memorial Park. This location is intended to provide comfort to family and friends as they pay their respects to the beloved journalist and politician.

Unquestionably, his family, colleagues, and the many individuals he impacted through his work are mourning the loss of Ryu Geun-chan, whose legacy within the broadcasting and political fields will be long remembered.
