Kazakhstan And Uzbekistan To Open New Railway By 2027

The collaboration aims to boost exports and tourism along the Silk Road route.

ASTANA – Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are set to strengthen their economic ties with the launch of a new railway connecting the two nations, slated for completion in 2027. This ambitious infrastructure project aims to significantly boost export transportation, opening new avenues for trade and fostering regional cooperation as reported by Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) on January 3.

The construction of the new railway line is poised to redirect freight traffic away from the existing Saryagash-Tashkent section, which has been under strain. By establishing this new railway branch, officials hope to relieve congestion at Saryagash station and increase the volume of goods exported to Uzbekistan. KTZ stated, "For these purposes, Kazakhstan Temir Zholy is implementing an investment project worth 286 billion tenge (US$545.9 million)."

This considerable investment will also involve utilizing materials sourced from local producers. The project is expected to create around 3,400 temporary jobs during construction, along with over 500 permanent positions once the railway is operational.

The focus on enhancing transportation links aligns with Kazakhstan's broader strategy to improve connectivity through five major international railway routes, which are aimed at linking Chinese markets with Europe and Central Asia.

Complementing this major infrastructure development is the recently launched second voyage of the Jibek Joly tourist train, which commenced on January 2. This train is aimed at promoting tourism along the historic Silk Road. This year's itinerary includes two newly incorporated cities: Shymkent in Kazakhstan and Samarkand in Uzbekistan. During this five-day tour, more than 100 tourists, including journalists and bloggers, boarded the train to experience the rich heritage of ancient cities.

According to KTZ, the railway tour will allow travelers to explore key landmarks and immerse themselves in the historical atmosphere, following the footsteps of the Great Silk Road. The experience is unique as passengers can enjoy cozy overnight accommodations within the train, aiding relaxation as the train continues its route to showcase the significant cultural sites of both nations.

Officials emphasized the importance of these developments, as they are not just about transportation; they are about fostering connections between cultures and people, leveraging historical ties to create opportunities for contemporary growth. The railway expansion, when completed, could create substantial economic opportunities and serves as another step toward fostering mutual growth between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

Through strategic initiatives such as this, both nations are working toward solidifying their roles as key players on the regional transportation map, potentially transforming the economic landscapes of Central Asia. With the Jibek Joly railway tours and the planned opening of the new railway line, travelers and traders alike can look forward to a more integrated and accessible future.

Both the investment and tourism aspects reflect the broader economic policies aimed at encouraging trade and cultural exchange, reaffirming the historical significance of the Silk Road, which centuries ago facilitated rich exchanges of goods, ideas, and cultures connecting distant lands.

The completion of the new railway is seen not only as transportation advancement but also as fostering unity, cooperation, and economic resilience, heralding new beginnings for Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan as they chart their course toward greater collaboration and prosperity.
