Kazakhstan And Philippines Lead Global Power Grid Expansion

Joint initiatives aim to integrate renewable energy and meet rising demand amid energy transition.

Global efforts to expand power grids are underway, with recent initiatives aiming to address increasing energy demands and bolster the integration of renewable energy sources. One notable project is being undertaken by Samruk-Kazyna, the sovereign wealth fund of Kazakhstan, which plans to connect the power grid of Western Kazakhstan to the national network. This initiative is part of Kazakhstan's strategy to modernize its energy infrastructure and improve energy access across the country.

According to recent reports, this integration is expected to significantly increase the reliability and efficiency of electricity supply in the region. The connection will allow for enhanced power distribution, which is particularly important for areas experiencing rapid industrial growth. Meanwhile, across Southeast Asia, Emerging Power Inc. (EPI) is setting aside P1.19 billion to support the integration of its solar farm project located in Zambales, Philippines, with the Luzon power grid. Their subsidiary, Northern Palawan Power Generation Corp. (NPPGC), proposed to construct dedicated transmission facilities to connect its Cawag solar power project to the 230-kiloVolt Subic substation managed by the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines.

Reportedly, NPPGC views the proposed project as the most feasible way to dispatch the capacity of the new solar installation when required, according to statements made during filings with the Energy Regulatory Commission. This dedicated point-to-point transmission facility is pivotal for testing, commissioning, and operational readiness of the solar farm.

Completion of the first phase is anticipated by June 2025, with the second phase following up by October. The integration of the solar facility aims to alleviate the mounting demand for renewable energy as the Philippines braces for peak energy consumption anticipated to grow by about 5.3 percent annually through to 2028. Authorities project peak demand could escalate to approximately 68.5 gigawatts by 2050, demonstrating the urgent need for innovative energy solutions.

With energy consumption continuously increasing alongside the populace and industrial activities, energy stakeholders, including governmental entities, are emphasizing the importance of supporting renewable energy developers like NPPGC. This cooperation is set to boost the commercial viability of significant renewable energy projects, assisting them to enter the market as soon as possible.
