Kay McGrath Announces Fiancé's Death While Traveling

The beloved former presenter mourns Richard Moore, who passed away suddenly during their trip to India.

Former Channel 7 presenter Kay McGrath has announced the devastating news of her fiancé Richard Moore’s sudden death from a heart attack, which happened during their trip to India. McGrath shared the heart-wrenching news with her followers on social media on Saturday.

“I have some devastating news to share with you dear friends,” McGrath wrote on Instagram. “My darling fiancé and soulmate Richard has passed away after suffering a sudden and totally unexpected heart attack in Agra, India. Local doctors did all they could to save him.”

The tragic incident unfolded only one day after the couple enjoyed their visit to the iconic Taj Mahal, where they shared what McGrath described as “such a special time.” She reflected on this bittersweet experience, saying, “The day before we’d shared such a special time at the Taj Mahal - which gives me some comfort. I’ll always treasure all the wonderful memories we created together over many years.”

McGrath’s tribute to Moore emphasized his qualities, describing him as “so loved and valued by family and friends.” She added, “He leaves a huge hole in our hearts. A kind, smart, generous, wickedly funny and genuinely good man - we all miss you so much darling.” Their engagement, which lasted since 2016, was marked by deep affection and companionship, and McGrath often expressed gratitude for finding her soulmate.

The former newsreader, who captivated audiences on Channel 7 for nearly 40 years, stepped away from her role as a presenter in 2020. Known for her work as a dedicated journalist and her efforts to raise awareness about significant issues—including child protection and breast cancer—McGrath has been celebrated for her contributions both on and off the screen. She was even awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her efforts.

Following the tragic news, tributes began to pour in from friends, fans, and the media community. Many have expressed their condolences, with heartfelt comments reflecting the shock and sorrow felt by those who knew Moore and the impact he had on their lives.

McGrath shared light-hearted moments from her and Moore’s life together with the media, recalling how she whimsically told him about their future celebrations. “I told him (she laughs), and he’s going to tread water for 12 months and let me catch up and we’ll celebrate 70 together,” she said previously to The Courier-Mail.

Having divided their time between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, McGrath and Moore’s relationship was filled with shared experiences and mutual support. Their engagement remained strong, with McGrath stating, “We do have one of the longest engagements, but I think it’s a bit sexier to be engaged than married.” This playful comment illustrated their comfortable, modern partnership.

The couple’s plans were disrupted tragically, and the pain of loss echoes through McGrath's words and social media tributes. Her expression of grief resonates as she thanked those lending support during this challenging time, saying, “Special thanks for the outstanding love and support from Fiona and Mark Deadman, Cate and Chris Allen-Ducat, Charles Morley, and the team from Imagine Holidays Australia.”

The loss of Richard Moore has sent ripples through McGrath's community of supporters and friends. The couple's adventures were filled with experiences and milestones, now marked with reflections of love and remembrance. Moore is survived by his daughter and granddaughter, who, amid the grief, are reminded of the kindness and joy he shared.

For McGrath, the suddenness of this heart-wrenching event transforms the narrative of their dream vacation to India—a place of beauty and connection—to one of mourning and loss. Nevertheless, within her grief, she holds onto the cherished moments they created together, knowing those memories remain forever.”
