Kawaguchi City Celebrates Events While Facing Changes

Local quiz, business closures, and new openings mark the community's evolution.

Kawaguchi City is buzzing with news and events, from fun quizzes to business changes and environmental challenges. Residents recently took part in the Kawaguchi City quiz series, aimed at fostering community spirit by testing their knowledge about local landmarks. This time, participants were quizzed on the area surrounding Nishikawaguchi Station.

The quiz presented a photo of the setting—one familiar to daily commuters. The question posed was straightforward: "Where is this located within Kawaguchi City?" The answer? A colorful clown statue situated right outside the west exit of Nishikawaguchi Station. This whimsical landmark, previously featured on Kawaguchi Magazine back in January 2021, has stood quietly welcoming visitors and residents alike.

The excitement of the quiz was contrasted by more somber news—a closure of long-standing significance. The beloved Liquor Mart Iseya, which had served the Kawaguchi community for 147 years, officially closed its doors on December 31, 2022. A sign posted on the store informed customers, "Closed as of December 31, 2022, at 18:00.” Located at 802 Kiso Road, its departure marks the end of an era, leaving many residents nostalgic for the store’s long history and contributions to the community.

On January 7, locals who visited the site found the closure notice still prominently displayed, evoking memories of years gone by. The loss of this old establishment is bittersweet; residents expressed feelings of sadness but also gratitude for the store's service. The community reflected on the passage of time and the inevitable changes it brings.

Meanwhile, Kawaguchi City Hall announced another important update: garbage collection services will be paused on January 9 and 10, 2023. This decision was prompted by operational challenges stemming from a fire incident on January 3 at the朝日環境センター (asahi environmental center), which has temporarily halted waste reception and incineration processes. Following this event, the city shifted their garbage handling to the戸塚環境センター but couldn't fully meet demands, leading to the temporary service suspension. "Garbage collection will be halted on January 9 and 10 due to structural reorganization," stated city officials. Residents have been urged to cooperate and help with waste reduction efforts as the city navigates this unexpected challenge.

Despite these hurdles, there is also exciting news on the horizon. A new store called Paseos is set to make its debut at the renovated site of the former Sogo department store, now transitioning to the life-style oriented 三井ショッピングパーク ららテラス川口 (Mitsui Shopping Park Lalaterasu Kawaguchi). The anticipated opening date is May 2025, aiming to attract diverse shoppers, particularly the youth demographic. "Paseos will open at the renovated site of the former Sogo department store," announced representatives from the Taharaya company, which is spearheading this new venture.

The new store will be easily accessible, connected via pedestrian bridges to Kawaguchi Station on the JR Keihin-Tohoku Line, which promises to draw crowds from both the local area and beyond. Paseos aims not only to deliver on style but to offer affordability, catering to various fashion needs from children to adults, as well as home goods. The company is strengthening its urban strategy by introducing smaller format stores alongside their traditional larger outlets, indicating growth and adaptation to consumer trends.

These updates embody the dynamic character of Kawaguchi City. It moves forward, embracing change and community engagement. From quizzes and historical closure to challenges and new opportunities, the city continues to evolve, retaining its hallmark of resilience and community spirit. Residents are encouraged to stay connected, as Kawaguchi Magazine promises to offer the latest local updates and news daily. The area’s vibrant social fabric will undoubtedly thread through these changes, weaving new stories and experiences for all who reside and visit Kawaguchi.
