Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Launch Delayed Due To Weather

Prime Minister Modi's visit postponed as IMD warns of adverse conditions ahead of inaugural train launch.

The eagerly awaited launch of the Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, initially scheduled for April 19, 2025, has been postponed due to adverse weather conditions. This delay follows a forecast from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting widespread rains and potential thunderstorms across Jammu and Kashmir, particularly on the inauguration day.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was set to flag off the inaugural train from Katra to Srinagar, marking a significant milestone in the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which aims to enhance rail connectivity to the Kashmir Valley. The project, spanning 272 kilometers, includes the construction of two iconic bridges: the Chenab Rail Bridge, recognized as the world’s tallest railway bridge, and the Anji Khad Rail Bridge.

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh confirmed the postponement, stating that the decision was made in light of the adverse weather forecast. The IMD has issued yellow and orange alerts, indicating light to moderate rainfall and the possibility of snow in the region from April 16 to April 20, with the most significant impact expected on April 18 and 19.

Preparations for Modi’s visit had been extensive, featuring mock drills and trial runs along the USBRL. A successful trial run of the Vande Bharat train was conducted just days before the scheduled inauguration. However, safety considerations for the Prime Minister in potentially severe weather conditions ultimately led to the decision to delay the event.

According to the IMD, the incoming weather system is a Western Disturbance, which is expected to bring gusty winds, lightning, and isolated hailstorms to the Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh region. As a precaution, security forces had already heightened their alert status, conducting combing and search operations across the Union Territory in anticipation of the visit.

Kashmir Inspector General of Police VK Birdi had convened a high-level security meeting to ensure preparedness for the upcoming events, including the PM’s visit and the Amarnath yatra set to begin on July 3, 2025. The security grid was placed on maximum alert, particularly in the districts of Kathua, Udhampur, Reasi, and Ramban.

The USBRL project has been completed in phases since its inception, with significant sections already operational. The Katra to Srinagar Vande Bharat Express is designed to operate smoothly in cold weather, with features such as heating systems and automatic doors, capable of functioning in temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius.

Currently, train services in the Kashmir Valley are limited to the Sangaldan–Baramulla section, while long-distance trains terminate at Katra. The introduction of the Vande Bharat Express is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Katra and Srinagar, from about six to seven hours by road to approximately three hours by train.

Officials have indicated that new dates for the inauguration will be communicated once the weather conditions improve. The inauguration is tentatively expected to occur by the end of April or early May, depending on the weather.

In summary, while the postponement of the Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express inauguration is disappointing for many, the safety of all involved remains a top priority. The project promises to enhance connectivity and accessibility for the Kashmir Valley, and its eventual launch is highly anticipated.
