Kate Hudson Leads Netflix's New Comedy ‘Running Point’

Fans are eager for the show's potential second season after its dramatic finale.

Kate Hudson is back on screens with Netflix's new comedy series, Running Point, which follows her character Isla Gordon as she navigates the challenges of leading the Los Angeles Waves, a fictional basketball team. Inspired loosely by the experiences of Jeanie Buss of the L.A. Lakers, the series debuted on February 27, 2025, to mixed reviews but has quickly gained traction among viewers drawn to its blend of humor and sports.

The premise is simple yet engaging: Isla, stepping up to the presidency of the Waves after her brother undergoes treatment, faces not only the pressures of the NBA world but also the sexism rampant within it. "When we follow Isla's story, it’s about more than just basketball; it’s about empowerment, overcoming prejudices, and proving oneself, particularly as a woman in this domain," Hudson said during her promotional interviews.

The show comprises ten episodes, and Hudson’s performance as Isla has been widely praised for balancing comedic elements with emotional depth. The series finale left fans on the edge of their seats, as Isla's team reached the playoffs but experienced heartbreak with a loss during game seven. Despite the team's failure, the real skirmishes seem to center around Isla's leadership dynamic with her brothers, particularly her brother Cam, whose return from rehab at the season’s end raises new tensions.

Following the finale, Hudson teased potential developments for season two, stating, "I had so much fun doing this. I just want to keep doing it." Meanwhile, Mindy Kaling, who co-created the series, echoed this sentiment, expressing her eagerness to continue collaborating with the cast and crew on additional seasons to explore more of these complex narratives.

Among the storylines, the budding of Isla's relationship with her coach, Jay Brown, who is played by Jay Ellis, serves as both comic relief and dramatic tension. After their kiss at the season’s end, viewers are left guessing whether Isla will rekindle her romance with her ex-fiancé, Lev, who has moved on to new opportunities.

"Isla’s growth throughout the season has been substantial. By the end, she’s learning the harsh realities of leadership and personal sacrifice, and this is emphasized through her complicated relationships with family and friends," Hudson explained. "The choices she makes reflect the greater struggles any woman might face, especially when those choices are under scrutiny."

Costume designer Salvador Pérez Jr. emphasized the importance of fashion within the series, stating, "With Mindy Kaling at the helm, we wanted to present Isla as not just powerful but also feminine. That was key for us." Isla’s wardrobe reflects her evolution from the "party girl" image to her role as president, showcasing suits and stylish outfits, meant to convey both authority and femininity.

This shift isn't merely about clothing; it symbolizes Isla’s growing confidence and her desire to be taken seriously by her peers. According to Pérez, "Every look was very intentional to showcase Isla’s growth. We aimed to show how her confidence blossomed, moving from more vibrant colors and less refined outfits to sophisticated couture throughout the season." Hudson’s character was also compared to Buss for overcoming similar barriers, balancing familial responsibilities with her burgeoning career.

Despite mixed reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes noting its uneven pacing but charming characters, Running Point has attracted attention for its witty dialogues and the portrayal of complex themes surrounding leadership under duress. The series seeks to highlight not just the triumphs but the struggles women face, both personally and professionally, particularly within male-dominated industries.

The end of the first season raised questions not only about team dynamics but also about how Hudson’s character will navigate personal relationships. Cam’s unexpected return complicates matters and sets the stage for significant family conflict as Isla must stand her ground. “Gordons never lose,” Hudson stated, hinting at the cat-and-mouse game expected to play out next season.

When asked about the future of Running Point, Kaling hinted at many unresolved plotlines, from Travis Buggs' rehab story to Isla's leadership style and the fallout from the playoff loss. “Our goal was to capture the essence of women breaking barriers, and we want to continue exploring these characters as they evolve," Kaling noted.

Despite Netflix not yet confirming the renewal, both Kaling and Hudson have made it clear they are eager to return. With the first season delivering laughs and poignant moments, fans are hopeful for season two's announcement. By all indications, the Waves' drama—both on and off the court—is just getting started.
