Kate Hudson And Danny Fujikawa Celebrate Love After 15 Years

The couple balances their careers and family while navigating wedding plans over time.

Kate Hudson and Danny Fujikawa knew each other for 15 years before falling in love. Their relationship began to take roots as childhood friends in the blended families of Los Angeles, culminating in a public romance that has been closely followed by fans. In May 2017, the couple made their red carpet debut during the premiere of the film Snatched, showcasing their bond to the world.

Hudson, known for her impressive career in Hollywood, seems genuinely smitten with Fujikawa. In 2020, she expressed how he makes her feel loved, saying, “He makes me feel beautiful every single moment of the day, even when we have fought. I still feel loved. His devotion to the family unit makes me feel safe and confident and secure.” While Hudson is often in the spotlight, Fujikawa has a quieter public presence, preferring to stay out of the limelight. Yet, he publicly praised Hudson in 2019 at the Women’s Cancer Research Fund’s gala, remarking, “What makes her the most courageous... [is that] in the face of fear, she doesn’t back down.” Fujikawa continued, revealing his admiration, “I’ve seen her do things that I can’t imagine doing myself, and I’m very proud of her. And I’m in awe of her for some of the things that she is able to do when she sets her mind to it.”

To gain insight into Fujikawa's background, it is notable that he comes from a family with a rich history. His grandfather, Dr. Yoshihiko Fred Fujikawa, was one of the first Japanese-Americans to attend medical school in the U.S. The momentous legacy continues through his parents, Ron Fujikawa and Melissa Linehan, who had three children: Danny and his brothers, Michael and Braden. Following Ron's death in 2012, Danny's family continued to emphasize the importance of connections. Ron had previously dated Rebecca Dyer, who was married to composer David Foster, making Danny familiar with high-profile Hollywood circles.

Delving deeper into Fujikawa's aspirations, he originally pursued music at New York University but soon found his true call in the industry. He initially gained fame as the lead of the band Chief, which released notable works like the EP The Castle Is Gone and their first album, Modern Rituals, in 2010, before disbanding in 2011. Pivoting to music production, he founded Lightwave Records in 2013 and has honed his skills by collaborating with various artists—including Hudson, for whom he co-produced her upcoming 2024 debut album, Glorious.

Reflecting on how their romantic journey began, Hudson noted during an interview on The Talk that their connection tracked back to their families. “We’ve known each other for 15 years. He’s my best friend’s step-brother,” she relayed. In December 2016, their first real date transpired almost accidentally during a hike. Hudson reminisced about it, “No moves were made on this first date. In fact, it took months for him to make a first move! And as a kiss on this bridge would have been nice, the kiss a year later was so much sweeter.”

Fast forward to September 2021, Hudson and Fujikawa announced their engagement through social media, celebrating their love in a romantic post. However, the couple has taken their time with wedding plans. In June 2023, Hudson sweetly referenced their decision to marry when they have more time. “I just haven’t planned the wedding,” she explained. “I go back and forth, I go, ‘Do I really want a big wedding?’ We’re so happy. It’s not the first thing I need.” This admission mirrors her sentiments expressed in December 2022, where she mentioned feeling unhurried about wedding plans.

In March 2025, during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Hudson candidly confessed, “I just don’t have the same kind of like, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to get married…and I can’t wait for the party!’” She acknowledged that the idea of planning a wedding just felt overwhelming. Rather than rush into a marriage, she’s open to simply cherishing their engagement status indefinitely. “I like the idea of being engaged forever. I love it,” she shared, suggesting the unconventional path works for her.

The love between Hudson and Fujikawa is also evident in their family dynamics. Together, they welcomed their daughter, Rani Rose, on October 2, 2018, named in honor of Fujikawa's late father. Hudson announced Rani’s birth on her Instagram, highlighting the significance of the name, saying, “Ron was the most special man who we all miss dearly. To name her after him is an honor.” In addition to Rani, Fujikawa has stepped into the role of a loving father figure to Hudson's two older children—Ryder with ex-husband Chris Robinson and Bingham with ex-boyfriend Matt Bellamy. Celebrating his devotion, Hudson praised him on Father’s Day in 2021, stating, “My love, simply put, you are the most brilliant father.”

Looking to the future, Hudson remains open about the potential for expanding their family. Earlier in December 2022, she revealed, “I've been having children my entire life. I’ve got my 4-year-old, and I’ve got a kid in college. And I don’t even know if I’m done yet.” Such sentiments underscore her personal journey while navigating motherhood amidst a continuing romantic relationship deeply rooted in friendship.

Kate Hudson and Danny Fujikawa's relationship story is a testament to patience, enduring friendship, and mutual admiration—a narrative shaping a modern approach to love, family, and commitment.
