Kastaars Awards 2023 Honors Talent And Glamour

Gert Verhulst shines with career prize as Daphne Agten celebrates media personality award.

It was a night of celebration and recognition at the 2023 Kastaars Awards, as the television and entertainment industry gathered to honor the best and brightest of the past year. The event saw memorable moments, emotional speeches, and, of course, the glamorous red carpet where attendees showcased stunning fashion.

Leading the accolades was Gert Verhulst, who took home the coveted 'Carrièreprijs'. Clouseau's frontman Koen Wauters presented the award, which caught Verhulst by surprise. "I wanted to thank my parents, my children, and above all, my Ellentje, because without her, none of this would have been possible," he expressed, fighting back tears as he reflected on his long career. Verhulst admitted, "For as long as I can recall, all I wanted was to be on television. If you get to do this for 40 years, you realize it’s the best job on earth." His heartfelt acceptance speech moved many, attesting to his impact on the Belgian television scene.

Daphne Agten was named 'Mediapersoonlijkheid van 2024', marking yet another huge milestone for the celebrated presenter. "What is happening?! I had hoped for everyone else, but I deserve this too, and I’m proud to say it now. I hope this proves you’re never too old, too big, or too anything to try," she exclaimed during her emotional speech. It capped off what was already a phenomenal week for her, having also received the Ensor for 'Best Lead Role' just days before.

The 'Doorbraak van 2024' award recognized up-and-coming talent, awarded to Manu Van Acker, who humorously admitted to forgetting his speech but made sure to thank everyone who helped him along the way, exclaiming, "I fucking love you!" His genuine emotions brought laughter and joy to the audience.

This year’s ceremony also included the 'Impactprijs', awarded to Eric Goens for his program 'Het Conclaaf'. The importance of media coverage and its effect on society didn’t go unnoticed, and Goens expressed gratitude for the recognition.

Fashion was at the forefront during the event, with presenters Ruth Beeckmans, Rik Verheye, and Kamal Kharmach delightful as they guided the evening. Although there were fewer live performances, pre-recorded tributes and skits kept the audience entertained. Modelling contemporary glamour, attendees donned everything from classic suits to bold, statement pieces — ensuring all eyes were fixed on them as they walked the red carpet.

Popular figures like William Boeva and Vincent Fierens showcased their unique styles. Boeva humorously accepted the award for 'Televisieoprogramma van 2024' for his show, saying, "It's such an honor. Thank you to everyone for the kind words. And thank you to those who haven’t wanted to play board games with me anymore," drawing laughter from the crowd.

The event highlighted heartfelt tributes to those who have passed, including emotional performances by artists like Berre, who paid homage to media personalities lost over the year. His cover of 'Stargazing' was particularly moving, emphasizing the significant losses felt within the industry.

A particularly touching moment came from the cast of 'Familie', with the vibrant Annie Geeraerts sharing her secret to longevity at 98: "Just keep breathing," she quipped, humorously hinting at having found love again. The presence of her partner Paul, though not at the ceremony, was felt through her words.

Gert Verhulst received heartfelt tributes from Belgians Koen Wauters, Free Souffriau and James Cooke, who performed their own rendition of 'Une Belle Histoire'. The emotional tribute struck a chord with many, as it encapsulated the affection felt for Verhulst across the industry.

Fashion statements varied widely, with many stars opting for daring and diverse looks. For example, Celine Van Ouytsel wowed the crowd with her white jumpsuit from Nadine Merabi, declaring, "This was hanging in my closet, and I find it beautiful, so why not wear it?" This sentiment was echoed across various personalities as they embraced their unique styles.

The night culminated with the final award, 'Best Television Program', which went to 'De Verraders'. Hosted by Jeroom Snelders, the presentation of this award marked the close of the event, leaving attendees eagerly anticipating next year’s festivities.

With all awards handed out, the Kastaars Awards 2023 successfully celebrated talent and camaraderie within the entertainment community. "Going out with a bang!" concluded the night, enticing everyone to put the date down for next year’s spectacular event.

This year's ceremony reaffirmed the continuous evolution and excitement within the Belgian media scene and the boundless potential of its future stars.
