Karla Dodds Sentenced To 12 Years For Fatal Crash

Drunk driver’s actions lead to the death of friend Truman Hub, leaving family in deep grief.

A dramatic courtroom scene unfolded on March 21, 2025, as 25-year-old Karla Dodds was sentenced to 12 years in prison for causing the death of her friend Truman Hub through dangerous driving. The tragic incident occurred in November 2022 when Dodds, who was intoxicated, lost control of her Hyundai i10 while driving with six passengers, resulting in a fatal crash that claimed 22-year-old Hub’s life.

The events leading to the accident began on the night of November 19, 2022. After working her shift as a barmaid at a pub in Whitley Bay, Dodds indulged in two glasses of wine and two shots of tequila at a local nightclub. Ignoring the risks associated with her intoxication, she offered to drive her friends to a party, cramming six of them into her small car — with one person even squeezed into the boot.

The driving conditions were dangerously chaotic. Witnesses described a scene filled with loud music and singing, and Hub had his head hanging out of a rear window when the car collided with a lamppost on the A191 near North Tyneside General Hospital. The impact caused the vehicle to flip, leading to fatal injuries for Hub. While Dodds initially fled the scene, police arrested her a few hours later, where she was found to be nearly twice over the legal drink-drive limit and also tested positive for drugs.

During her trial, Dodds expressed remorse, stating, "I know I did wrong and I'm so sorry," but insisted she had not been driving dangerously. However, Judge Roger Thomas sought to convey the seriousness of her actions, emphasizing that her impaired state and recklessness resulted in overwhelming evidence against her. He characterized her driving as “highly impaired” and noted that her actions demonstrated a lack of remorse as she had previously shown no accountability after the crash.

"Everything about this case shows self-pity rather than true remorse," Judge Thomas remarked during the sentencing. He went on to explain that Dodds had previously pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving but was convicted of the more serious charge of dangerous driving due to the circumstances surrounding the case.

The pain and lasting impact of Hub's death were poignantly expressed by his mother, Rozalind Hub, during her victim impact statement. "Truman was full of sunshine, laughter, mischief and love whose presence would light up any room," said Rozalind. Her statement was filled with raw grief as she reflected on the profound loss of her son, conveying how his death has left a void in her life that can never be filled. Rozalind expressed her heartache, saying, "Now I feel my life has no meaning. I am here in body but my heart is dead like Truman..."

Rozalind's emotions were further highlighted as she recounted the horror of that night, recalling how she heard the police tell her of her son's death. "The chilling screams never stop echoing in my mind," she shared. Her articulate expressions of grief and anger toward Dodds for her reckless behavior painted a vivid picture of the lifelong impact on Truman’s family. "I think it’s only natural that we feel hostility, anger and even hatred towards Miss Dodds. We can never forgive her for so cruelly cutting our son’s life so short," she stated, reflecting the anguish and frustration felt by many families affected by such preventable tragedies.

The court was also made aware of Dodds’ troubled history with driving. Before this incident, she had already been disqualified from driving for a year due to a previous drug driving offense. Her arrest after the crash showed a troubling pattern of behavior, underscoring the deeper issues at play. Dodds’ defense attorney argued that she was a “warm-hearted, kindly soul,” and insisted that she was genuinely remorseful for her actions. However, the judge dismissed this claim citing her efforts to flee the scene and her lack of responsibility following the accident.

Law enforcement officials reiterated the importance of responsible driving and the devastating effects of reckless behaviors. Sergeant Dave Roberts, who led the investigation, stated, "Dodds’ actions to drive under the influence and in such dangerous conditions – cramming six passengers into her small vehicle after a night out – has ultimately led to Truman losing his life." He expressed hope that the significant prison sentence would bring some measure of closure to Hub's family, although acknowledging that no length of time would ever truly erase the pain caused to them.

As Dodds begins to serve her sentence, the complexities of this case remind us of the dangers associated with reckless driving, especially when alcohol is involved. The court’s decision signals a continued commitment to holding individuals accountable for their choices, particularly when those choices have irreparable consequences. The Hub family now faces the emotional journey of healing, forever altered by a decision made in moments of poor judgment.

In the aftermath of this tragedy, it becomes evident that advocacy for sober driving must intensify to prevent similar situations. Educating individuals on the serious implications of driving under the influence may help avert future losses. Truman's story serves as a powerful reminder of the preciousness of life and the critical responsibility that comes with being behind the wheel.

While the legal proceedings may have concluded, the emotional scars left behind will linger for Truman’s loved ones. It is a vivid call to society to reflect on the choices we make and their potential ramifications, emphasizing that every decision made in moments of indulgence can lead to lasting repercussions that extend far beyond our own lives.
