KAPS-4 Reactor Achieves Full Capacity Success

India's Kakrapar Atomic Power Station expands nuclear energy ambitions with operational success

India's Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) has proudly announced the operational success of its second 700 MW nuclear reactor, marking another significant leap for the nation within the nuclear energy sector. This achievement is not just about numbers; it reflects India's growing capabilities to produce safe and sustainable energy through indigenous technology.

The reactor, known as KAPS-4, officially began its commercial operations on March 31, 2024, and has now ramped up to full capacity of 700 MWe. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) confirmed this milestone, underscoring its importance as India strives to increase its Nuclear power contribution.

The KAPS-4 unit reached its first 'criticality' on December 17, 2023, which means it started producing enough controlled nuclear fission to sustain its own reaction. This marks the necessary step toward becoming operational

Before hitting full capacity, KAPS-4 had been functioning at approximately 90% efficiency. The successful transition to full power aligns with the permissions granted by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), demonstrating adherence to strict safety protocols.

This new reactor is part of India’s broader ambitions to expand its nuclear power generation. The nation plans to add 14 more reactors, each of the same design as KAPS-4, by 2031-32.

The NPCIL currently operates 24 reactors with a total capacity of 8,180 MW, alongside eight additional units under construction, adding to the nuclear infrastructure. This expansion is not only pivotal for energy security but also reflects the increasing reliance on nuclear power to combat climate change.

Out of the planned new reactors, ten with a combined capacity of 7,000 MW are still in preliminary stages, awaiting commencement. Once operational, these facilities are expected to bolster India's total installed nuclear capacity to 22,480 MW.

Industry experts have lauded this move as both timely and necessary, considering India’s fast-growing energy demands. With the continuation of this momentum, it appears the country is steadily transitioning toward cleaner energy sources.

There is also potential for nuclear energy to play a pivotal role within India's energy mix, which now increasingly necessitates sustainable solutions amid rising fossil fuel costs. Major stakeholders believe enhanced nuclear capacity could significantly lessen dependence on coal, aiding significant emissions reductions.

Environmental advocates appreciate this shift toward cleaner energy as it promises to address pollution issues contributing to climate change. Hence, the successful operation of KAPS-4 is viewed as strategically important not only economically but also environmentally.
