Kano Governor Releases Eight Female Inmates From Prison

Abba Kabir Yusuf acts to improve conditions and support for vulnerable inmates

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf took a significant step towards reforming the correctional system in the region by facilitating the release of eight female inmates from the Goron-Dutse Correctional Centre. This compassionate act occurred during an unscheduled visit to the facility on May 10, 2025, where the governor personally assessed the living conditions of the inmates and addressed their welfare.

Among those released were two pregnant women and two nursing mothers, a move that highlights the governor's commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by vulnerable populations within the correctional system. Governor Yusuf settled their fines and compensation debts, allowing them to reintegrate into society more swiftly.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor expressed his concern over the high number of inmates awaiting trial. Out of a total of 1,939 inmates in the facility, only 382 had been convicted, while a staggering 1,557 were still awaiting trial. This discrepancy underscores the urgent need for judicial reforms to expedite the legal process and alleviate overcrowding in correctional institutions.

During his visit, Governor Yusuf emphasized the importance of rehabilitation and the government's role in supporting inmates after their release. "I assure you that the state government will work with the judiciary to accelerate the dispensation of justice and ease congestion in correctional centers," he stated. His remarks were intended to inspire hope among the inmates, encouraging them to view their current situation as a test of fate and to embrace positive change in anticipation of their eventual reintegration.

To further support the welfare of the inmates, the governor ordered the immediate provision of essential supplies, including cows, foodstuffs, mattresses, blankets, and assorted beverages. These provisions aim to improve the living conditions of the inmates and ensure they have the necessary resources for a smoother transition back into society.

In addition to his visit to the Goron-Dutse Correctional Centre, Governor Yusuf also made a surprise visit to the Janguza Maximum Security Correctional Facility. During this visit, he announced plans to transfer inmates from the Kurmawa Correctional Centre to Janguza, citing the need for better infrastructure and conditions for the inmates. He expressed satisfaction with the facilities at Janguza and reiterated his administration's commitment to improving correctional environments across the state.

Yusuf extended special appreciation to former Minister of Interior, retired General Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau, for his pivotal role in establishing and constructing the Janguza Correctional Centre. This acknowledgment highlights the importance of collaboration between government officials to enhance the correctional system.

Inmates at both facilities expressed their gratitude to the governor for his visit and for his commitment to improving their conditions. The governor's proactive approach to correctional reform reflects a broader commitment to social justice and rehabilitation, aiming to provide a second chance for those who have made mistakes.

As the governor continues to advocate for reforms within the correctional system, he remains focused on facilitating the release of eligible inmates, supporting students' return to school, and empowering others through vocational training. These initiatives are part of a comprehensive strategy to ensure that inmates can reintegrate into society successfully and contribute positively to their communities.

Governor Yusuf's actions resonate with a growing recognition of the need for humane treatment within correctional facilities. By addressing the specific needs of vulnerable populations, such as pregnant women and nursing mothers, the governor sets a precedent for future reforms that prioritize rehabilitation over punishment.

As he navigates the complexities of the justice system, Yusuf's administration is poised to make significant strides toward a more equitable and effective correctional system. The governor's commitment to improving the lives of inmates and supporting their reintegration into society reflects a compassionate approach to governance that prioritizes human dignity and social responsibility.
