Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has taken significant steps to enhance the welfare of inmates and promote education in the region by facilitating the release of eight female inmates and granting scholarships to top students.
On Saturday, May 10, 2025, Governor Yusuf facilitated the release of eight female inmates from the Goron-Dutse Correctional Centre by settling their fines and compensation debts. Among those freed were two pregnant women and two nursing mothers, highlighting the governor's commitment to addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable groups within the correctional system.
During his visit to the facility, Governor Yusuf assessed the living conditions of the inmates and expressed his concern over the high number of incarcerated individuals. Out of 1,939 inmates in the facility, only 382 had been convicted, while a staggering 1,557 were awaiting trial. This situation underscores the pressing need for judicial reform and faster dispensation of justice.
In an effort to improve the welfare of the inmates, the governor ordered the immediate provision of essential items including cows, foodstuffs, mattresses, blankets, and assorted beverages. This initiative aims to enhance the living conditions of those still incarcerated and reflects the governor's commitment to rehabilitation and support.
Furthermore, Governor Yusuf announced plans to transfer inmates from the Kurmawa Correctional Centre to the Janguza Maximum Security Correctional Facility, a move that is expected to optimize the management of correctional facilities in the state. He also extended special appreciation to former Minister of Interior, retired General Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau, for his role in establishing and constructing the Janguza Correctional Centre.
Inmates at both facilities expressed their gratitude to the governor for his visit and the commitment he has shown towards improving their conditions.
In addition to his efforts in the correctional system, Governor Yusuf also made headlines during the second investiture of the Chancellor and the 5th combined Convocation ceremony of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, held on the same day. Here, he announced the state government's decision to award automatic foreign scholarships to the nine best graduating students.
"I wish to announce the state government’s decision to award foreign scholarships to all nine best graduating students," Governor Yusuf stated, emphasizing the importance of education in fostering growth and development.
The governor's announcement came as part of a broader commitment to enhance educational opportunities for students in the state. He pledged to complete all ongoing projects initiated by the previous administration to further support the development of the institution and its students.
During the ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Mus Yakasai, revealed that over 18,000 students graduated across various disciplines, covering seven combined graduating sets. Notably, 2,950 postgraduate students received their degrees and diplomas, marking a significant achievement for the institution.
In recognition of their contributions to society, five eminent Nigerians were conferred with Honorary Doctorate Degrees (Honoris Causa) during the convocation. The awardees included notable figures such as Senator Rabi’u Kwankwaso and Alhaji Dahiru Barau Mangal, who expressed their gratitude for the honor bestowed upon them.
Governor Yusuf's dual initiatives in promoting inmate welfare and educational advancement demonstrate a comprehensive approach to governance that seeks to address both immediate social issues and long-term developmental goals. His actions reflect a commitment to not only enhance the lives of those within the correctional system but also to invest in the future leaders of Kano State.
As the governor continues to implement reforms and initiatives aimed at improving the lives of his constituents, the impact of these efforts will likely resonate throughout the state, fostering a more just and educated society.
