Kanazawa Institute of Technology achieved a historic victory at the 103rd National High School Soccer Tournament by defeating Kagosaka High School from Kagoshima 4-3 on penalties after a hard-fought match ended 0-0.
The intense game was held on December 29 at U-Vance Todoroki Stadium, where both teams demonstrated solid defense and efforts but failed to find the back of the net throughout the regulation time.
Kanazawa's players, particularly goalkeeper Alex Ishiyama and forward Kanta Maruyama, shone during the game, with Maruyama making several significant attempts, one of which almost broke the deadlock. Yet, it was Kagosaka's sturdy defense and the presence of experienced players like Yuto Oishi who managed to hold their ground.
The match remained scoreless at halftime and throughout the second half, pushing both teams to the suspenseful penalty shootout to decide the winner. With both teams managing to score their first three penalties, nerves began to show during the fourth round.
Both Ishiyama and Kagosaka's keeper, Junsei Fujiyoshi, managed to save their respective fourth penalties, leaving the tie to hang on the fifth shot. Kanazawa Institute of Technology took the lead by scoring their final penalty, putting pressure on Oishi to keep Kagosaka's hopes alive.
Unfortunately for Kagosaka, Oishi's shot hit the crossbar and resulted in the team’s elimination, culminating the disappointing end to their eight-year wait to return to the national stage.
Reflecting on the historic moment, Kanazawa's head coach, Kin'ichi Kitagawa, stated, "We’ve worked hard all year for this moment and the team truly showcased their abilities. This victory can really boost their confidence moving forward. Our next challenge will be against Teikyo High School, and we will prepare accordingly. "
On the other hand, Kagosaka's coach, Yusuke Nitta, expressed disappointment, saying, "We came here with high hopes but fell short; we lacked the experience to secure the win. Today's outcome is tough to handle for us, especially considering the expectations. But the boys will learn from this experience and grow stronger for the future."
The match attracted local fans who were eager to see high school soccer talent on display at this esteemed tournament, accentuating the importance of youth sports as they inspire and develop the next generation of athletes.
Both teams displayed sportsmanship, and the event showcased the growing talent and potential across Japan's high school soccer scene. Kanazawa Institute of Technology's next matchup against Teikyo High promises to be another thrilling contest as they carry forward the victory momentum.
