Kamituga Faces Dire Mpox Outbreak As Health Services Struggle

South Kivu’s remote gold mining town grapples with rising infections amid logistical challenges and limited resources

A Gold Mining Town Struggles as Mpox Grips Congo

KAMITUGA, Congo—A small town deeply rooted in gold mining has erupted as the epicenter of the latest mpox outbreak, causing alarm among health officials and the community alike. The South Kivu province has been marked by grief and rising fear as it is now officially the focus of what the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified as a global health emergency. With health services overstretched and resources minimal, the challenges facing Kamituga are dire.

One harrowing story emerges amid the chaos, centering on Divine Wisoba, who lost her one-month-old daughter, Maombi Katengey, to mpox last August. Wisoba, who described the joyful anticipation of her daughter's birth as divine, now stands by her daughter's grave, grappling with the loss and the spiraling crisis surrounding her. “Our biggest joy was transformed to devastation,” she lamented, highlighting the deep personal toll of this health crisis.

Mpox—previously known as monkeypox—often triggers only mild symptoms, including fever and body aches. Yet, it has the potential to lead to serious health issues characterized by painful blisters on the body and, tragically, death, particularly among vulnerable populations. Around 6,000 suspected cases have emerged across South Kivu, yet the true number could be much higher, as access to care remains severely limited.

The uptick of mpox cases has spiked alarmingly, with local hospitals reporting around five new cases each day and weekly suspected cases jumping from around 12 earlier this year to over 600 by August. Locals attribute this surge to their lack of adequate knowledge and resources to combat the disease. Wisoba recounted her own infection prior to her daughter's illness, expressing disbelief at her ignorance of such a dangerous virus until it had wreaked havoc on her family.

Community leaders, like Kasindi Mwenyelwata, have taken on the challenge of informing residents about mpox, going door-to-door to raise awareness of symptoms and preventative measures. Yet, both resources and support from the government and health organizations remain scant. AlIMA, one of the few aid organizations operating within Kamituga, is running out of funds and manpower to tackle the crisis, calling for immediate external support.

Current mobilization tactics are hampered by insufficient funds for deploying information campaigns or making diagnostic testing available. Community leaders acknowledge the desperate need for training among local health workers and requested more resources and educational materials to effectively communicate the dangers of mpox.

The situation is compounded by logistical hurdles. With the rains making roads to Kamituga barely passable, the delivery of vaccines arrives late. The Congolese government has budgeted over $190 million for its initial mpox response, which includes acquiring three million vaccine doses. Yet only 250,000 doses have reached the country so far.

Doctors and experts applaud the need for vaccines but warn it’s just one layer of protection. They stress the importance of isolations, contact tracing, and community education efforts to keep the virus from spreading. Though vaccines are prioritized for adults, limited evidence exists on their effectiveness for children, the majority of whom are now beginning to contract mpox. Community experts express fear over their unknown vulnerability, especially since information on how long recovered patients might remain contagious for is vague at best.

Challenging conditions, like extreme poverty and malnutrition among the displaced population, also contribute to the difficulties of managing the outbreak. Many residents of Kamituga have found themselves living under extreme duress due to constant violence and conflicts over mineral resources by 120 different armed groups. Health services have seen the fallout of these societal issues seep through the cracks, with the Kavumu hospital regularly treating four times its patient capacity.

With the economy on the brink, the coming months could prove tumultuous for Kamituga. Dr. Dally Muamba, program coordinator for ALIMA, warned of the dire effect on both the economy and public health if the outbreak continues unchecked. “If support keeps waning, and mpox spreads, there will definitely be adverse impacts,” he predicted.

The alarming rise of mpox cases is not merely restricted to adults; children are also affected. This reflects how broadly the virus spreads through various forms of close contact, including skin-to-skin contact often associated with sex but extended through other everyday interactions as well. Of the reported 32 infected pregnant women, nearly half suffered from miscarriages or stillbirths—a trend alarming for local healthcare providers.

Effective containment and treatment of mpox require mobilization of substantial national and international resources, yet health experiences have been varied across the country. Health experts have criticized the lack of urgency around the outbreak and the disparity with responses seen during past public health crises like Ebola and COVID-19. Professor Ali Bulabula of the University of Kindu remarked on the troubling incongruity between the mpox response and the millions allocated for other diseases. He noted mpox is still viewed as a localized concern with limited economic impact on the global stage, which has fueled the lack of funding and interest.

The local healthcare system is at breaking point as Kamituga attempts to combat the rising tide of mpox cases. With the community determined to get some clarity and help, comprehensive education and equitable healthcare access must follow to combat this growing crisis. The stakes are high not just for those infected, but for the entire community as they struggle against the specter of mpox and its devastating effects.

This outbreak has unveiled the inadequacies of existing health structures and the urgent need for global focus on the challenges faced by vulnerable populations, linked deeply to socio-political crises. Only by elevatory resources and fostering international partnerships can Kamituga begin to turn the tide against mpox, ensuring no more families like Wisoba’s have to pay the tragic price of ignorance and neglect.
