Kamala Harris Honored At 2025 NAACP Image Awards

Keke Palmer named Entertainer of the Year, celebrating Black culture and resilience

The 56th NAACP Image Awards kicked off on February 22, 2025, at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, celebrating the achievements of Black entertainers across various genres. The ceremony, marked by poignant speeches and dazzling fashion, highlighted significant winners and insightful moments.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris made headlines as she accepted the Chairman's Award, her first major public appearance since leaving office. "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty," Harris stated, invoking the NAACP's legacy and urging the audience to stay resilient amid political challenges. The once-second-in-command did not shy away from the reality of their current struggles, declaring, "The American story will be written by you, written by us, by We the People," echoing her earlier campaign mantra of unity. Harris’s speech received thunderous applause from the audience, comprising notable figures from entertainment and civil rights.

While receiving accolades, Harris reflected on the historical significance and dedication of the NAACP, recognizing the ‘stony road’ faced by the civil rights movement. She urged those present to mobilize, educate, and advocate for justice, emphasizing the role of collective power. The night became especially poignant as she spoke against the backdrop of recent political challenges, which have seen diversity and inclusion initiatives under threat.

Among the many celebrated at the event was Keke Palmer, who took home the coveted title of Entertainer of the Year. Palmer, surprised by her win, shared her admiration for fellow nominees, including Kendrick Lamar and Cynthia Erivo. She praised the importance of the event, saying, "It’s such an amazing category to be in with all these people. It’s so important we all come here together and celebrate one another with one another." Palmer also secured the award for Outstanding Host for her work on NBC’s "Password," highlighting her multifaceted talents.

The Wayans family, iconic for their contributions to film and television comedy, were inducted to the NAACP Hall of Fame. Marlon Wayans humorously recounted the influence of his older brother, Keenon Ivory Wayans, who launched their collective careers with the launch of "Fox's 'Living Color'". Marlon’s heartfelt tribute reflected the perseverance and legacy shared by the family, who have brought laughter to audiences for over three decades.

Fashion at the event reflected the evening's glitz and glamour, with many stars donning eye-catching outfits. Chloe and Halle Bailey turned heads with their bold plunging necklines; Chloe dazzled in a sculptural Gaurav Gupta gown, and Halle opted for sequins by designer Sabina Bilenko. Their styles set the tone for the evening, emphasizing the celebratory spirit of Black culture. Sarah Jeffery, from the acclaimed film "The Six Triple Eight," impressed attendees wearing another chic design featuring gold accents.

Presented during the evening were several noteworthy performances. Ledisi graced the stage with her stirring rendition of “How I Got Over,” providing an uplifting moment of remembrance for those affected by the nearby Altadena wildfires. Actor Morris Chestnut introduced the audience to the latter with compassion, highlighting the devastation suffered by the community, but reminding everyone of their spirit. More than 22 attendees from the impacted areas were present, greeted with applause from the audience.

Several other notable winners from the event included Beyoncé, who secured Outstanding Album for her impactful work, "Cowboy Carter," and Outstanding Female Artist. Meanwhile, Chris Brown received Outstanding Male Artist, showcasing his continuing dominance in the music industry as he tied with Usher for most wins within this category.

Moving to the film sector, tyler Perry's film, "The Six Triple Eight," clinched the award for Outstanding Motion Picture, affirming his position as one of the leading figures driving Black narratives within Hollywood. The competition was fierce with other remarkable films nominated, yet Perry’s latest accomplishment solidified his legacy as storytelling continues to evolve.

On another front, Dave Chappelle was honored with the President's Award for his influence and provocative humor. His acceptance speech addressed the entertainment industry’s responsibility to challenge stereotypes about Blacks and demonstrate the depth of Black experiences. Chappelle’s recognition as the first comedian to receive the award sparked conversation on the impact of comedy on culture and society.

Throughout the night, the NAACP Image Awards demonstrated the powerful intersection of entertainment, culture, and politics. Reflecting on their new wave of impact, attendees were reminded of the association's efforts to advocate for social justice and equality. The evening’s balance of honor, celebration, and remembrance left both attendees and viewers inspired and optimistic for the future.

For many, the NAACP Image Awards mark not just the celebration of achievements but also echoing hope and resilience within the Black community. From heartfelt speeches to remarkable achievements, the event truly embodied the essence of Black excellence.
