Kamala Harris Announces Memoir Detailing Historic 2024 Run

Former Vice President Kamala Harris reveals her behind-the-scenes account of the shortest modern U.S. presidential campaign, reflecting on lessons learned and future hopes

Former Vice President Kamala Harris is set to release a revealing memoir titled 107 Days this September, offering an unprecedented look inside her brief but historic 2024 presidential campaign. Published by Simon & Schuster and scheduled for release on September 23, 2025, the 320-page book recounts the whirlwind period following then-President Joe Biden’s unexpected withdrawal from the race, a decision that thrust Harris into the Democratic spotlight and ultimately shaped the course of that election year.

In a heartfelt video announcement shared on social media, Harris reflected candidly on her journey. “Just over a year ago, I launched my campaign for President of the United States,” she said. “107 days traveling the country, fighting for our future — the shortest presidential campaign in modern history. Since leaving office, I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on those days and with candor and reflection, I’ve written a behind-the-scenes account of that journey. I believe there’s value in sharing what I saw, what I learned, and what it will take to move forward.”

The title 107 Days directly references the length of her abbreviated campaign, which began in July 2024 after Biden stepped aside amid growing concerns about his age and fitness for office. Harris quickly found herself at the helm of the Democratic ticket, making history as the first woman and first woman of color to run for president on a major party ticket. However, the campaign was cut short when she was defeated by Republican Donald Trump in the November 2024 election.

Simon & Schuster’s CEO, Jonathan Karp, praised the memoir’s gripping narrative, describing it as “not a typical political tome.” He likened the book’s spirit to popular dramas like The West Wing and Rocky, saying, “It reads like a suspense novel.” Karp emphasized the memoir’s depth, stating, “107 Days captures the drama of running for president better than just about anything I’ve read. It’s one of the best works of political nonfiction Simon & Schuster has ever published. It’s an eyewitness contribution to history and an extraordinary story.”

Adding a unique literary touch, Harris collaborated with Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Geraldine Brooks to shape the memoir’s narrative. Brooks, known for her journalistic acumen and storytelling prowess, worked closely with Harris over several months, both in person and via Zoom, to develop a compelling and intimate account of the campaign trail. Dawn Davis, senior vice president of Simon & Schuster and publisher of its 37 Ink imprint, noted, “Even though I knew how it ended, I was turning the pages as if it were a mystery.”

The memoir’s focus is squarely on the campaign itself, rather than Harris’s tenure as vice president. This comes after Harris’s 2019 memoir, The Truths We Hold: An American Journey, which chronicled her upbringing and early political career, including her time as a U.S. senator and California’s attorney general.

Harris’s announcement of the memoir comes on the heels of another significant political decision. On July 30, 2025, she declared she would not run for governor of California in 2026, ending months of speculation about her potential candidacy. Speaking to Stephen Colbert on his Late Show—her first interview since the 2024 election—Harris described the American political system as “broken” and expressed a desire to step back from transactional politics. “For now, I don’t want to go back in the system,” she told Colbert. “I want to travel the country, I want to listen to people, I want to talk with people, and I don’t want it to be transactional, where I’m asking for their vote.”

Despite stepping away from immediate political office, Harris remains a significant figure in the Democratic Party and is widely regarded as a potential presidential candidate for 2028. Sources close to her have suggested she is keeping her options open for a future White House run.

The memoir announcement arrives as the Democratic Party grapples with regaining public support amid challenging political landscapes, having lost control of the White House, the House, and the Senate. Harris’s reflections in 107 Days may offer insights into both the campaign’s internal dynamics and the broader challenges facing the party.

Financial terms of the book deal were not disclosed, but Simon & Schuster confirmed Harris had been working on the manuscript for several months and will also narrate the audiobook version. The project was represented by Creative Artists Agency and coedited by Jonathan Karp and Dawn Davis.

The release of 107 Days positions Harris alongside other prominent political figures who have turned to memoir-writing as a way to shape their legacies and share their perspectives. Simon & Schuster’s catalog includes memoirs by Hillary Clinton, former Vice President Mike Pence, and other notable politicians. In 2024, the publisher also released Nancy Pelosi’s The Art of Power, a detailed account of her historic role as the first woman Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

As Harris prepares to embark on what promises to be an engaging book tour, many will be eager to hear her firsthand account of a campaign that, while brief, was charged with historical significance and political drama. Her memoir offers not just a political narrative but a personal journey of resilience, reflection, and hope.

“Sometimes the fight takes a while, but I remain full of hope, and I remain clear-eyed,” Harris said in her video announcement. “I will never stop fighting to make our country reflect the very best of its ideals, always on behalf of the people.”
