Kakeru Yamanobe Traded To Yakult Swallows For Financial Considerations

Versatile infielder reflects on seven years with Seibu while aiming for success with new team

In a surprising move on May 1, 2025, the Seibu Lions announced that infielder Kakeru Yamanobe has been traded to the Yakult Swallows in a financial transaction. This trade marks a new chapter for the 30-year-old player, who has spent the last seven years with the Lions after being drafted in the third round of the 2018 NPB Draft.

Yamanobe, known for his versatility on the field, has played both infield and outfield positions during his career. He attended Kirigaoka High School in Kanagawa, followed by Sakurami University and Mitsubishi Motors Okazaki, before joining the Lions. Despite his potential, this season has been challenging for Yamanobe, as he has made only five appearances in the first team, recording three at-bats without a hit.

After the announcement, Yamanobe expressed his surprise at the trade, stating, "I am honestly surprised. I want to remain energetic and true to myself even after joining the Swallows. In terms of my play, I hope to showcase what I've been working on since spring camp and contribute to the team's victories." He also reflected on his time with the Lions, saying, "I couldn't perform as I wished in the Lions' games, but I have countless memories with the fans who supported me from the bench. It’s hard to carry all those memories with me. Thank you very much for the past seven years with the Lions."

Yamanobe's new journey with the Swallows will see him don the number 37 jersey. Although his statistics this season include no hits and one stolen base in the first team, he has shown better form in the second team, where he played 14 games with a batting average of .258 and one RBI.

The Swallows are looking to reinforce their roster due to recent injuries, making this trade a strategic move. Yamanobe's ability to play multiple positions is expected to provide depth to the team as they navigate the ongoing season.

With this trade, the Seibu Lions now have 65 players under contract, leaving them with five open spots. The Lions will be looking to fill those spots as they continue their campaign in the 2025 season.

Fans of both teams will be keenly watching how Yamanobe adapts to his new environment and what contributions he can make to the Swallows. His journey from a promising draft pick to a versatile player has been a rollercoaster, but his determination to succeed remains evident. As he steps onto the field with his new team, there's no doubt that Yamanobe will bring his energetic spirit and commitment to winning.
