Kaizer Chiefs Claim First DStv Diski Challenge Title

Chiefs secure the championship with a 3-0 win over Magesi FC

In a historic achievement, Kaizer Chiefs have been crowned the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) champions for the first time ever, following a decisive 3-0 victory over Magesi FC at Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday morning, April 26, 2025. This remarkable win not only secured the title for the Soweto giants but also marked a significant milestone in the club's illustrious history.

Goals from Imaad Hendricks, Nkosana Mbuthu, and Thulani Mabaso propelled the Chiefs to victory, allowing them to collect maximum points at home. Coming into this match, the Chiefs needed just three points from their final two matches to clinch the DDC title. Their path was made easier after Chippa United was found guilty by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) for failing to honour a fixture against the Chiefs on February 1, 2025. The PSL awarded the Chiefs a 3-0 victory for that match, which placed them four points clear at the top of the standings.

With the win against Magesi, the Chiefs finished the season with an impressive total of 67 points from 27 games. This triumph means they dethroned Stellenbosch FC, the defending champions who had previously secured the title twice, in the 2021/22 and 2023/24 seasons. In a twist of fate, Stellenbosch's title defense came to a crushing end as they suffered a 3-0 defeat to Marumo Gallants earlier on the same day at Idas Valley Sports Ground.

Stellenbosch FC, despite the loss, remains in second place with 60 points after 27 matches, ensuring they will finish the season as runners-up. The final matches of the 2024/25 DDC season are set to take place on Saturday, May 3, 2025, where the Chiefs will officially lift the trophy in a ceremony following their last game against AmaZulu FC away from home at King Zwelithini Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 10:00.

Notably, the Chiefs achieved this historic title without the services of four key players who are currently representing Amajita at the CAF 2025 AFCON Under-20 tournament in Egypt. Goalkeeper Takalani Mazhamba, defenders Gopolang Taunyana and Sifiso Timba, and striker Naledi Hlongwane have all been called up for national duty, showcasing the depth and resilience of the Chiefs' squad.

The Chiefs' victory is a testament to their hard work and determination throughout the season. Coach Molefi Ntseki expressed his pride in the team's performance, stating, "This title reflects the dedication and effort put in by the players and the entire coaching staff. We faced challenges, but we remained focused and united. Winning the DDC for the first time is a dream come true for all of us at Kaizer Chiefs."

As the Chiefs prepare for the trophy presentation, the excitement within the club and among their supporters is palpable. Fans have rallied behind the team, and the atmosphere at Dobsonville Stadium was electric during the match against Magesi. The victory is not just a win on the scoreboard; it represents a turning point for the club, which has been striving for success in recent years.

Looking ahead, the Chiefs will aim to build on this success as they continue to develop their young talent and strengthen their squad. The DDC title is a stepping stone towards greater achievements, and the club is eager to make its mark in South African football.

Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns also made headlines on the same day, securing their fifth consecutive win in the DDC by defeating Sekhukhune United 1-0, thanks to a goal from Sipho Ngqakabana in the 31st minute. Sundowns' consistent performance has kept them in contention, showcasing the competitive nature of the league.

As the DDC season draws to a close, all eyes will be on the final matches set for May 3, where the Chiefs will not only look to secure a strong finish but also celebrate their historic achievement as champions of the DStv Diski Challenge.
