Kailash Gangwal Of BJP Wins Madipur Assembly Election 2025

BJP's lead raises questions about AAP's ten-year stronghold over Delhi as voting percentages dwindle

NEW DELHI: The Madipur assembly constituency witnessed significant political drama as the results of the Delhi Assembly elections rolled in. Kailash Gangwal from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious, securing his position against AAP's Rakhi Birla and Congress's Jai Prakash Panwar. With this victory, Gangwal has not only made headlines but has also raised questions about the future of AAP, which has held power over the national capital for the past decade.

The voting for the Madipur constituency took place on February 5, 2025, with approximately 63% of registered voters casting their ballots—slightly lower than the 65% turnout recorded during the previous elections. The Election Commission announced the results for all 70 Delhi constituencies, marking this event as pivotal for the political atmosphere of Delhi. Voting occurred in one phase, allowing for immediate counting and transparency.

Gangwal, who amassed 44,888 votes, triumphed convincingly over Birla, who received 32,953 votes, and Panwar, lagging behind with 16,283 votes. Birla's nomination by AAP came after the previous party incumbent, Girish Soni, defected to BJP just days before the elections, which certainly heightened the stakes and competition for this election. Voter sentiments appeared to be against AAP, intensifying the fight against BJP, which aims to regain power after more than two decades.

The contest has historical significance, as AAP had seen considerable victories in previous years, culminating with Girish Soni's win in 2020 where he defeated BJP’s Kailash Sankla by over 22,000 votes. Soni had been instrumental for AAP, remaining undefeated since he first won the seat in 2013. With his replacement by Birla and subsequent departure to the BJP, the AAP's stronghold appeared vulnerable.

This election marked new territory as many voters reflected on AAP’s performance amid corruption allegations leveled against its leadership, including Arvind Kejriwal. The elections for the assembly come almost exactly ten years after AAP's historic win when it swept 67 of the 70 seats, leaving only three for BJP.

The Madipur election serves not only as a local contest between territorial political figures but also as part of broader electoral trends across Delhi. Analysts suggest the BJP's strategy capitalized on voter discontentment with AAP, hoping to leverage recent governmental initiatives highlighted during the Union Budget announcements and address allegations aimed at AAP's policies.

Poll of polls prior to the election suggested potential sweeping victories for BJP, forecasting between 39 to 47 seats along with AAP securing between 23 to 31. Congress seemed to bracing for another disappointing performance, expected to retain only 1 seat at most.

The date of the results announcement - February 8, 2025 - stands as another milestone as BJP eyes re-establishment of authority over the national capital.

The electoral results indicate how concerned voters are about local governance issues and past fulfillment of promises, which, according to many commentators, was heavily relied upon by the AAP's campaign strategies. "Kailash Gangwal has secured electoral victory over Rakhi Birla to become the Madipur MLA", reported by News18.

It remains to be seen how the results will influence the forthcoming political strategies, not only within Madipur but across the wider Delhi region. The shifting allegiance of voters will cater both parties to reassess their direct approach to local issues. With the results now confirmed, all eyes will be on how Gangwal plans to represent his constituents and whether the BJP can sustain this momentum leading to the next elections.

This election highlighted the dynamic political climate of Delhi and anticipations of upcoming legislative sessions shaped by this fresh mandate. The newly-elected MLA holds the responsibility to address constituents' needs standing against the backdrop of criticism and expectations following the recent electoral shift.
