The special episode showcases rare cuisine and stunning landscapes of Shiretoko, Japan's last unexplored region.

On March 31, 2025, TV Asahi will air a special episode of the popular show "Kaere Monday" that celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Shiretoko Peninsula's designation as a World Natural Heritage site. The episode, titled "Shiretoko SP," will feature a star-studded cast including the comedy duo Taka and Toshi, along with actors Haruka Sugino, Daihachi Miyagawa, and comedian Kondo from Harisenbon. Together, they will embark on a culinary adventure to uncover rare gourmet dishes in what is often referred to as Japan's last unexplored region.

The journey begins in Utoro, a coastal town located on the Shiretoko Peninsula, where the group will seek out exquisite local ingredients such as the elusive Shiretoko beef and the miraculous salmon known as "Keiji." Sugino, who revealed that this marks her first appearance on a variety show in 2025, expressed her excitement for the adventure ahead. As they set off, the group is immediately greeted by the stark, snow-covered landscapes that define the region.

Initially, the team faces challenges as they search for dining options in the remote area. Miyagawa humorously laments, "It’s already tough!" when they realize the nearest restaurants may be far from their location. To gather information, they decide to visit a nearby shop, where they learn that their quest for food might take them on a longer journey than anticipated.

Determined to keep spirits high, the team makes a pit stop at a famous roadside station, where they take a lighthearted photo in front of a rock formation resembling Godzilla. This moment of levity helps to lift their mood as they continue their search for the legendary cuisine of Shiretoko.

Eventually, their efforts lead them to a large hotel situated by the sea, which features a buffet-style restaurant renowned for its Shiretoko gourmet offerings. The group is treated to a remarkable culinary experience that includes the highly sought-after Shiretoko beef, often described as a "meat masterpiece," and the premium brand chicken known as Shiretoko Dori. The highlight of their meal is a dish featuring the world’s largest octopus, which leaves Toshi in awe as he exclaims, "Is there still such delicious food in Hokkaido? It’s limitless!"

As they savor these culinary delights, the group encounters the rare Keiji salmon, a fish that can only be caught in the Shiretoko Peninsula and parts of the Sanriku coast. They try the recommended dish known as "ruibe," a sashimi-style preparation that leaves Haruna Kondo exclaiming, "I’ve never had anything like this before!" Sugino, overwhelmed by the flavors, repeats, "Wow! This is delicious!" as they indulge in a lavish pasta dish topped with luxurious salmon roe.

The group’s excitement continues to build as they explore the unique flavors of Shiretoko, even as they face the harsh conditions of the cold climate. At one point, when Sugino’s energy dips, Kondo brings out a family heirloom photo that brings laughter and restores her spirits. The camaraderie among the group shines through as they share stories and memories, including a nostalgic moment when Sugino showcases an old basketball photo from high school, prompting admiration and laughter from her companions.

The adventure culminates with an exhilarating experience walking on the drift ice, an iconic feature of the Shiretoko region. They also venture into a mysterious ice cave, where the breathtaking views of the surrounding ice formations leave them in awe. The team finds themselves surrounded by a stunning 360-degree panorama of drift ice, marking a fitting conclusion to their remarkable journey.

As the special episode of "Kaere Monday" unfolds, viewers will not only witness the beauty and culinary richness of Shiretoko but also the warmth of friendship and laughter that binds the group together. The broadcast promises to be a delightful escape, showcasing the charm of Shiretoko as it celebrates two decades as a World Heritage site.

With the combination of stunning landscapes, exceptional food, and the engaging personalities of the cast, this episode is set to captivate audiences and inspire future travelers to explore the hidden gems of Japan.
