Kae Kizaki Triumphs At Ladies Jockeys Series

The Ladies Jockeys Series showcased female jockey talents at Sonoda Racecourse.

On March 12, 2025, the Ladies Jockeys Series, held at the Sonoda Racecourse in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture, spotlighted the remarkable talents of female jockeys across Japan. With nine competitors showcasing their skills, the event not only aimed to promote female participation within the sport but also captivated around 2,200 fans who gathered from all over the country.

The series consisted of two races held at Saga Racecourse on March 8, 2025, followed by two races at Sonoda on the concluding day. Points were awarded based on the finishing order, tallying the champion by performance across both locations. Kae Kizaki, the 31-year-old jockey from Aichi Prefecture, emerged as the overall champion, solidifying her prowess on the track.

During the day's races, the first was won by local favorite Serena Sasaki, who is just 22 years old. She expressed her mixed feelings about her performance, stating, "It was easy to ride because it was my local track. I regret losing, but I will do my best again next year." Her sentiments reflect both the pride and competitive spirit inherent to local athletes.

The event was not without merchandise, as fans eagerly purchased goods such as keyholders shaped like winning outfits worn by the jockeys. This added another layer of fan engagement, embodying the community spirit surrounding this jubilant gathering.

Kyouka Fukazawa, another notable participant who debuted as the first female jockey at Kasamatsu Racecourse after 20 years, had her own star turn. Representing her hometown of Himeji, Fukazawa finished with placements of 2nd and 4th overall, culminating her efforts as 5th place for the day. "My friends came to see me and I felt energized. I can't ride in my hometown without opportunities like this, so I was grateful. The horses also did their best for me," she remarked, showing her appreciation for such unique opportunities.

Overall, the day at Sonoda Racecourse was more than just competitive racing; it marked progress for female athletes within the sport. Currently, female jockeys are increasingly represented, with six females competing at the central races and another twelve, including those involved in heavy pull competitions under the banner of local races.

The significance of the Ladies Jockeys Series is underscored by its manifestation of empowering female jockeys and elevates them within the sport. Crowds, merchandise, and passionate competitors contribute to the resurgence and recognition of women's contributions to horse racing.

With events like these, the future appears brighter for female jockeys, along with their growing fan base. The scene on March 12 was not only celebratory; it served as inspiration and evidence of how far the sport has come and how it is continuing to evolve. Expect to see more initiatives supporting women athletes, making strides within historically male-dominated sports.
