Kaapo Kakko, the Finnish hockey player and former second overall pick of the 2019 NHL Draft, has been traded from the New York Rangers to the Seattle Kraken. The transfer, which took place on Wednesday, has sent ripples through the NHL community, especially considering Kakko’s potential and the circumstances leading to the trade.
The New York Rangers acquired defenseman Will Borgen and both third and sixth-round picks for the upcoming NHL Draft from the Kraken. This move follows Kakko’s recent absence from the Rangers’ lineup, which raised eyebrows and prompted speculation about his situation with the team.
The 23-year-old forward had been performing modestly this season, with four goals and ten assists over 30 games. Kakko averaged just over 13 minutes of ice time per game, which might have contributed to the perceived decline of his contributions on the ice. Since joining the Rangers during the 2019-2020 season, he has played 330 games, accumulating 131 points (61 goals and 70 assists). Unfortunately, he has often been unable to meet the high expectations associated with being the second overall draft pick.
Kakko's tenure with the Rangers culminated with a disappointing 0-2 loss against the Nashville Predators, marking his last game with the team. The setbacks had created tension within the organization, culminating with his omission from the lineup last Sunday without any reported health issues.
“I was surprised. I know when you lose, the coach has to do something. I think it’s pretty easy to pick out the young guy and kick him out of the lineup. That’s how I feel,” Kakko remarked during discussions following the trade, signaling his frustration with the situation. Coach Peter Laviolette's decision to bench Kakko seemed to spark rumors about the player’s future and dissatisfaction with his role.
With Kakko’s transition to the Kraken, he will be joined by Finnish forward Eeli Tolvanen, which could provide him with some familiarity and support as he attempts to revitalize his career. The hope is for Kakko to regain his form and contribute significantly to the Kraken’s lineup.
The Rangers, now reeling from this and previous trades — including the departure of captain Jacob Trouba to Anaheim — are also facing their own struggles. They find themselves deep within turmoil, aiming to stabilize their roster and improve their chances of making the playoffs.
This trade marks the conclusion of Kakko's six-season stint with the Rangers, where he signed a one-year contract extension worth $2.4 million last summer. Despite his evident talent, the consistency needed from him has been elusive, and this change of scenery might be just what he needs to fulfill his potential.
Kakko's move is not only significant for him but could alter the paths of both franchises. The Rangers are desperately seeking to improve their prospects, and Kakko, now with the Kraken, has the chance to capture the spotlight again. “Let’s see how this change will help me,” Kakko stated optimistically at the announcement of his trade.
