MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The excitement at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center reached new heights during the 2024 Beach Ball Classic, highlighted by local standout Julian Brown's stunning performance, which earned him the title of dunk contest champion. This victory marked him as the first athlete from Myrtle Beach High School ever to win the contest, placing him on the map alongside other notable basketball talents.
Brown's victory is part of the larger spectacle known as the Beach Ball Classic, which has become a treasured annual event, drawing some of the top high school teams across the United States. This year, the tournament kicked off on December 2024 with packed crowds enjoying basketball action, showcasing both boys' and girls' teams.
Alongside Brown, his teammate Jamarcus Carroll participated, highlighting the deep talent pool at Myrtle Beach High School. Meanwhile, Socastee's Bryson Sams and Sam Musser showcased their skills at the three-point contest, underscoring the local basketball community's strength during this pivotal tournament.
The Beach Ball Classic is not just about basketball; it's also about community and tourism. According to Chad Smith, the president of the Beach Ball Classic, the event significantly boosts local tourism during what is typically the off-peak season. "Those teams bringing family and friends, [so] it is a huge impact of those people being here," Smith explained. He estimates the tournament generates around 18,000 room nights, resulting in at least half a million dollars pumped back to the local economy from visitors dining and exploring the attractions Myrtle Beach has to offer.
The tournament also serves as an opportunity for players to gain exposure. Local fan Cam Nettles shared how the event has become a family tradition over the years, recalling how his father competed back in 1985. "It’s the several days a year we all get to connect. There’s nothing like it," he said, reminiscing about the memories and connections established over the years. Fans like Nettles cherish the event, which not only entertains but builds lifelong communities around the sport.
This past Saturday, Myrtle Beach High School faced Windemere High School from Florida. Although the team did not emerge victorious, head coach Eric Lyons praised the honor of being invited back to one of the most prestigious high school tournaments. "I think it’s tremendous, not only for our community but for the kids themselves to see where you are," Lyons remarked. He emphasized the importance of participation at events like the Beach Ball Classic for their growth and development.
The final day of competition for this year’s Beach Ball Classic was filled with anticipation, as the tournament wrapped up its initial playoffs with the championship games set to tip off at 7:15 p.m. The fierce rivalry and competitive spirit made for exhilarating basketball, and as thousands congregated to witness the action, it was clear this event had once again delivered unforgettable memories for players and fans alike.
With its rich history, the Beach Ball Classic continues to be a significant event for the Myrtle Beach community, encouraging talent and fostering connections. Whether it’s the electrifying dunks of athletes like Julian Brown or the passionate cheers from dedicated fans, the tournament captures the essence of high school basketball and the unity it fosters within the community.
