Jules Van Cleemput Announces Retirement At 27

Persistent injuries lead defender to end career at KV Mechelen where he began

Jules Van Cleemput, the 27-year-old defender, has officially announced his retirement from professional football, citing persistent injuries as the primary reason for this difficult decision. The announcement came on February 28, 2025, during a heartfelt video released on the social media channels of KV Mechelen, the club where he began and ended his career.

"My body prevents me from continuing to play football," Van Cleemput stated, emphasizing the toll injuries had taken on his career. "But I stop at the place where it all began." The Antwerp native's choice reflects more than just the end of his athletic career; it encapsulates his deep attachment to KV Mechelen, nicknamed 'Kakkers'.

Van Cleemput joined KV Mechelen’s youth academy back in 2013 and made his professional debut three years later under coach Yannick Ferrera. His first notable game came when he stepped onto the pitch during the 38th minute of a match against KAS Eupen, seizing the opportunity after the captain was sidelined due to injury. Despite showing great promise, Van Cleemput’s career was frequently marred by injuries, impacting his ability to play consistently.

Throughout his career, he faced numerous challenges, most recently missing the final five matches of the season due to a hip injury. "The circle is complete," he noted, reflecting on how he came full circle by ending his professional play at KV Mechelen after other stints.

After his debut with Mechelen, he spent time on loan at KSK Heist during the 2015-2016 season. His performance during this loan helped solidify his spot within the A-squad of KV Mechelen. Yet, injuries cast shadows on his achievements, preventing him from fully contributing to key moments, including the club’s promotion to the highest division and the victorious cup final of 2019, which he had to watch from the sidelines.

Following his first spell with KV Mechelen, Van Cleemput transferred to Sporting Charleroi, where he played until early 2024 before returning to his roots at Mechelen. Regrettably, his health troubles continued to plague his second stint as well, culminating in his recent announcement.

Van Cleemput expressed his gratitude to the fans, stating, "I hope to see you soon again in the stands, because thanks to you I have always felt at home here." His connection with the supporters was apparent, as he recounted his fond memories with the club and its passionate fanbase.

Across his career, Van Cleemput accumulated 68 appearances for KV Mechelen and over 100 matches in the Belgian top tier. His efforts on the field, including notable plays like splitting passes during pivotal games, showcased his talent when he was fit to play.

Mechelen has released statements expressing their best wishes for Van Cleemput's future, stating, "With Jules, we lose a homegrown player. The club wishes him all the best for the future. Always welcome at Malinwa, Jules! See you soon." This message speaks volumes about the bond between Van Cleemput and the club, solidifying the legacy he leaves behind.

Although he steps away from professional sports, the impact of his career at KV Mechelen and beyond will not be forgotten. His story serves as a poignant reminder of the unforeseen challenges athletes face, often behind the scenes, and the personal sacrifices made for the love of the game.
