JR West Japan is set to revamp its services significantly, introducing multiple enhancements across its rail network, particularly focusing on the Hokuriku Shinkansen and Sanyo Shinkansen routes. Effective January 14, 2025, the company will roll out notable changes to train schedules and special anniversary campaigns, aimed at improving convenience for passengers.
One of the key announcements from JR West pertains to the Hokuriku Shinkansen line’s "Tsurugi" service. Starting March 15, 2025, the first morning train, previously departing from Kanazawa, will begin its route from Toyama Station. This change signifies the extension of the train's operational range, as the Tsurugi will connect more effectively to the expanded rail service between Kanazawa and Tsuruga, projected to begin operations after the extension opens.
The current morning Tsurugi 11, which makes only one stop at Fukui Station on its route from Kanazawa to Tsuruga, will now depart from Toyama Station at 8:16 AM and will stop at Shin-Takaoka, Kanazawa, and Fukui. This alteration is expected to provide commuters with two trains operating every hour from Toyama during peak morning hours, facilitating easier trips to the Kansai region for work or leisure.
Not limited to just the Tsurugi service, JR West is also implementing changes to the afternoon schedule. The Tsurugi 27, which currently departs at 2:30 PM from Toyama, will now be adjusted to leave from Kanazawa, streamlining service and reducing wait times. The operational efficiency is aimed at offering more convenience to passengers traveling toward Tsuruga.
Beyond the adjustments to its schedule, JR West Japan is also making strides toward adopting autonomous driving technology. The company announced plans to launch GOA2-level automated driving technology on the Tsuruga to Kanazawa segment by 2029. This technology aims to alleviate the workload on train operators, allowing them to focus on safety checks at platforms and enhancing overall operational efficiency.
According to JR West, the GOA2 system enables train operators to initiate train departures with the push of a button, automates passing and stopping at stations, thereby optimizing energy consumption and enhancing punctuality.
"The introduction of this advanced system is part of our commitment to not only improve the safety and reliability of our rail services but also to contribute to sustainable transportation goals," said JR West Japan spokesperson during the announcement. This initiative aligns with the objectives of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, showcasing the company’s dedication to industry innovation.
Further celebrating its 50-year milestone, JR West Japan will launch the "Thank You for 50 Years, Major Discount Campaign" starting January 14, 2025. This campaign commemorates the entire Sanyo Shinkansen line’s opening and runs through March 10, 2025. During this period, passengers traveling on the specified route can receive 5% of their travel expenses back as WESTER points, creating motivation for enthusiasts and regular commuters alike to travel on the Sanyo Shinkansen.
For this anniversary, points will only be awarded for purchases made using specific products like e5489 or EX services (Express Reservations and Smart EX). Enthusiasts can earn up to 50,000 points, plus be entered for exciting additional rewards, including chances to win special point bonuses for riding specific series of trains, like the iconic 100 Series and others.
JR West emphasizes this campaign not only serves as gratitude toward its loyal customers over the past 50 years but also promotes the experience of traveling on the Sanyo Shinkansen line for new generations. To fully enjoy this unique railway experience, passengers are encouraged to participate without the need for enrollment, making it simple for everyone.
The combination of enhanced schedule services and celebratory campaigns is set to not only meet growing passenger demands but also heighten the overall travel experience within Japan’s extensive rail network. JR West Japan looks forward to offering exceptional service improvements to both everyday commuters and those visiting for leisure as the company moves toward its future goals.
With these strategic innovations and enhancements, JR West Japan solidifies its position as a leader within the railway industry, representing progress not only for its own operations but for the connective potential of rail travel across the region.
