JR Hokkaido is making headlines by announcing its new luxury tourism trains, named "Akai Hoshi" and "Aoi Hoshi," aimed at enhancing travel experiences across Hokkaido. Set to begin service from April 2026, these trains are part of the company's broader objective under the "Start Train Project" to revitalize the region's tourism sector.
The planned refurbishment of the trains, which will cost approximately 1.8 billion yen, reflects JR Hokkaido's commitment to offering unique experiences for travelers. The "Akai Hoshi" will cater to about 100 passengers and is envisioned as a luxury offering, featuring individual compartments, lounges, and even a traditional tea room. Its design draws inspiration from the historical significance of the Hokkaido development, symbolized by the red star associated with the region's pioneers.
Starting from late April 2026, the "Akai Hoshi" will primarily operate on the Kushiro to Shiretoko Shari line, allowing travelers to experience the stunning landscapes of eastern Hokkaido. Between late July and early November, this train will also feature as chartered services organized by travel companies, promoting scenic tourism.
Complementing this, the "Aoi Hoshi" is set to accommodate around 200 passengers and aims to reflect the natural beauty of the region, such as lavender fields and iconic blue ponds. This premium-class train is scheduled to run from early June to mid-September 2026 on the Furano line, with additional dates planned for winter operations.
Travel enthusiasts will be able to enjoy stunning views, as both trains include observation cars and spacious luggage areas aimed at enhancing comfort for passengers. From late January to early March 2027, the "Aoi Hoshi" is expected to operate longer routes, from Sapporo to Abashiri, coinciding with the breathtaking drift ice season, which is quite the spectacle.
JR Hokkaido reported, "The Akai Hoshi train features luxury classes with individual rooms and lounges, catering to diverse passenger needs." This insight highlights the thoughtful design aimed to enrich every traveler's experience.
Both trains are part of JR Hokkaido's effort to provide enriching travel experiences and stimulate local economies through tourism. With detailed service plans expected to be finalized by February 2025—detailing pricing, schedules, and ticket availability—interested travelers can anticipate unique journeys around Hokkaido's stunning landscapes.
This strategic approach not only enhances rail services but also repositions Hokkaido as a prime tourism destination, showcasing its natural beauty and cultural heritage. The ambitious projects underline the necessity of adapting to modern travel demands and the burgeoning interest from tourists seeking immersive experiences.
These developments come at a time when train travel is increasingly seen as sustainable compared to other forms of transportation, aligning with the growing momentum toward eco-friendly tourism solutions.
With such exciting plans on the horizon, JR Hokkaido is poised to transform the way people explore this beautiful region, connecting luxury travel with the breathtaking landscapes of Japan.
